nothing wrong with using machines for a period to get some kind of acclimation to weights. i used them for about 6-8 weeks before going with the free weights. i still use the hammer srength machines...

if you have heavy enough db's you can get an exercise ball put it behind you up against a wall and squat as you roll the ball up and down wall. not exactly the same as squats but might get you by...
