RT-PCR can identify exposure/infection as well as disease stage.

Some viruses cause cancer after acute infection.

Which physicians?

Record of exposure is helpful for epidemiology (tracking transmission rates, etc.).

Ct can be use to determine disease stage (infectious vs not).
