Don't worry, what you were doing were Romanian/Stiff Leg Deadlifts. Regular deads involve bending your knees and what you were doing was just a variation.
When I read about 20 rep squats it was only 1 working set. You had a few warm up sets and then you crank out 20 reps with your 10 rep max by taking long deep breaths in between each rep.
