Perhaps starting with the belt prevented you from developing a strong core, then when you dropped it (belt), your lack of strenth caused you strain & pain. Maybe drop the weight some and start over....

Maybe you just need to give it a little more time. I started out the same way, but it actually felt better/ more normal once i learned better form.....but I never had any back issues.
