I'm guessing that if he beat him up, dragged him in the ring, and pinned him or something, it would be obvious it was scripted. The way the presented made it look more like a legitimate injury.

I'm a big Triple H fan, but he's just not a sympathetic figure. Storyline wise, I could feel for Hogan, Shawn, even Cena and Austin. Triple H just doesn't garner the same emotion.
