Thanks guys. I get a lot of my information over at Ironhistory and some of the more active members there. There are some threads there dedicated to York squat stands and you can see the evolution of design and figure out approximately where they fall in the timeline. There's still a lot of stuff unknown about early York stuff, even to the big time collectors. One way to learn about this stuff is to look at old Strength and Health magazines and other published literature that shows the equipment, old advertisements, catalogs, etc. For example I was able to date my vintage York Oly set by finding a picture (with the help of a friend) of the collars in a LIFE magazine article from October 1945. Thus I know that the set pre-dates Oct 1945. Before that no one could accurately date the collars and bar I had because no one even knew they existed before I found them! Based on some other evidence I think my Oly set dates to probably around 1941 or 42, right before the war started. Pre-war York stuff is really rare, not much survived and a lot probably got turned into tanks and guns for the war effort.

I have to agree with this; there are a couple of guys who really know the old stuff, but there are bits and pieces or pockets or certain areas where we really need to shed light on certain segments of York (and others). LIke you said, going through old Strength & Health and other publications can really help someone develop an appreciation (and knowledge) of the stuff.
re: other comment: yes, I believe it's a Milo. We have a bunch of Milo with documented provenance from Sig Klein and Prof. Attila. I started this, but haven't gotten very far, yet:

Cool page Ivanko. Now you just have to find one of those Roberts Big wheel sets!
Should also mention with the help of Ffrink I have filled out my roundhead collection from 10-60lbs. For the time being, I think that's enough for me! I'll post pics sometime.

Ah, nothing quite like the face of a madman performing the split clean.
Notice anything familiar about those plates, collars, and bar Terpak is holding? :)

Terpak worked in the factory and would paint the plates.

Awesome read, POTA. I really liked the last part about the building. Nothing fancy or glamorous. The original black iron gym.
Rescued 1 milled 25 lb the other day ... Yes there was only one York in an entire warehouse but look at how perfect the milling is ...

Let me know if anybody comes across a pair of 9 lb Roundheads ?
Thank you for sharing the scans, POTA!
TLYNCH777, I may have been hypnotised by the mill marks on that 25.

Picked up a York bar a couple weeks ago at Play it again sports. The bar was mostly black and I thought part of it may have been painted. It looked a little rough but was straight and the sleeves spin well. I have no idea how old the bar is. What do you guys think about it? It has no center knurl. The knurling is pretty fine. I did not measure the diameter of the bar but it cant be thicker than my Rogue or Pendlay bars. It is stamped York Barbell and York PA on the collar. It has a split sleeve and appears to have a pinned end. I cleaned up the ends with WD-40 and a wire brush on a drill. It cleaned up nicely I think.
Here are some links to pics. Can't post directly because its only my second post (just deleted the www and put space before the numbers)
First pic. Bar appears to have been painted at some point?

I wondered how long it would take for someone to comment on that. I like how they look together :-)
A friend of ours took York rounds from broken dumbbells and welded our EZ-Curl bars for fixed barbell onto them. They look good. Got a photo somewhere.
Also like that little ad for "Pre-War York" mentioning 12-1/2 and 20 lb sizes.
Nice gear. The bar was probably blued at the factory.
