My friend from high school was doing this with 300 lbs. I've never seen or read about this before. He was doing bench press with underhand grip of the bar. How does this differ from the overhand? I've never tried it, but it looks dangerous.

That seems like a good way to drop weight on your chest.
I think it involves your triceps more. I've tried them before, but they feel very awkward and uncomfortable to me...so why do something that has a high chance of leading to injury? Besides, if I want to hit my chest, I know plenty exercises better than this...same goes for triceps.
was it easier to push up weights underhanded compared to overhand? the guy was doing 300 lbs... thats crazy.

Maybe for some it's more natural than others, but I think most people press more weight with a normal overhand grip.
Seriously, underhand bench really works you muscles in a good way for good bench poundages apparently. It hits mostly tris and front delts and some chest and lats. Its underrated really and "akward" for most, but it will help most in benching good numbers if mastered.

Bring your arms up in your typical bench press width. Now supinate the hands. What happens? Your upper arms come in closer to the torso. This takes emphasis away from the chest and places it to the triceps.
yup, reverse grip bench press hits the triceps
it would have to work the triceps and front delts more, the ideal way to tax the chest with bench press is to flare elbows out away from your body and im guessing with this reverse grip press your elbows would be paralell to your torso taking the emphesis off the chest.
It definately works the triceps. I have tried it in my triceps routine and prefer the close grip bench press. 300 Pounds though....... Damn, how much does you friend bech?
Try it on A Smith machine, makes it more comfortable and better able to target the tri's. B.S. on the 300, break a young'ns wrists.
damn thats pretty hard tobelieve 300 on reverse grip bench thats incredible i've only used 135 and didn't do anymore cuz as you said they feel akward for tris i prefer CGBP
The world record bench about 15 years ago or so was set with a reverse grip. The difference isn't really that great when you get used to doing it that way.
Oh, and it's a friggin' great triceps exercise... if your wrists can handle it.
