White vs. Wheat Bread
I'm a little confused about this. Did I buy the wrong kind of wheat bread? I have this one brand of wheat called Country Wheat and the white that I have is Stroehmann. The thing is, on the nutrition facts on the bags it says for 1 slice of wheat it has the same amount of calories, sugars, protein, carbs, as 2 slices of the white stroehmann. Can anyone help; because I thought white bread was supposed to be terrible in terms of losing weight?

why would it be terrible?

White bread has a higher GI.

Both are starchy complex carbs, just like white rice and brown rice. Even if white rice/bread is higher on the GI index, I don't believe that it is THAT much higher. Brown tends to have more fiber.

As long as you are eating something else with your bread, and you aren't in contset prep, I don't think you really need to worry about the GI of your food. For me, it all comes down to personal taste. I like brown rice more than white, wheat over white, etc.
Also, yes, whole grain products can contain more calories than the white stuff, but whole grains have more natural, and avalible, vitamins and minerals. Enriched products have vits and mins that were put back into the product when it was being produced. These things aren't natural, and your body can have a more difficult time of digesting them.
GI really isn't important because of the wa it was tested. The GI was determined with 50g of carbs and on an empty stomach. If you are eating like a normal person, your stomach will not be empty, and you probably won't be getting 50g of carbs from just 1-2 sclices of bread. Plus, You have protein and fats to slow down digestion, further nullifying the importance of GI.
If you are looking for a WW bread that is similar in cals to regular white bread, you can use Nature's Own WW bread. On the bag it says it has 14 whole grains. It's ceap, and is 50 cals a slice. Great for sandwiches and the like.
Hope this helped.

as far as your question in regards to weight loss, from what i've read white bread has starches that are quickly metabolised(sp?) by the body in a shorter amount of time than wheat bread. wheat bread that is made from whole grain components take longer to metabolize therefore leaving you fuller longer and not spiking your sugar levels like white bread can while being broken down...hope that came out somewhat coherent, i read it on the internet on a bunch of health sites and tried to translate it best i could, lol.:)

The whiter the bread, the quicker your dead.

Agree

white enriched bread spikes your insulin levels which triggers your body to stop burning fat. So in that way and the higher fiber content 100% whole wheat is better.

when eaten together with fats and proteins, the insulin response is similar from high and low gi foods.

The broscience in this thread is making me dizzy.
Maybe the wheat bread slices are bigger, or denser than the white. Ever think of that?
White or wheat, just eat. Just get your fiber etc somewhere in your diet.

I don't get the statement just get your fiber somewhere of course you should be eating a good amount of fiber everyday, but why would you choose either when wheat is the healthier choice.

Ok I understand. I just don't believe it doesn't matter when there are healthier options out there the way I eat is just to put the best stuff in front of me and believe it does matter.

Ever thought that white rice and bread is Bleached therefor taking the nutrients out of the food itself? So its nearly as good as eating cardboard.

1. White rice is not bleached.
2. White flour is not necessarily bleached.
3. Bleaching has nothing to do with nutrients.
4. Cardboard has no nutritional value.
5. You have no idea what you are talking about.

u guyz r rite. wite bred spikez ur insoln an givz u teh fatz. oh noez!
That said, the differences in body composition that will result from consuming white versus wheat bread will be negligible.

the whole wheat bread probably has more fiber. Fiber is good.
-
Personally, I can't satnd wheat bread... the whole wheat stuff that's as hard as ****, that being said I don't like white bread much either after I tried some 12-15 grain bread that I usually eat. I love the crunchy grains in those types of bread :)

LOL mr Horse don't be so cerial i was joking.
Im aware of what white rice and brown rice are.
White rice has just had the outta layer of bran removed therefor making it not as healthy as brown rice.
