Catabolic state and morning protein

Hi people

New to the forum so a big hello.

Ive been reading about proteins recently and have just read a brief bit about catabolic states in the morning. From what I understand when you are sleeping your body is repairing itself. During your sleep your body may burn muscle instead of fat therefore drinking/eating protein when you wake up is a good idea. Is a catabolic state basically the opposite of anabolic?

Ive also read that eating protein in the morning is better than carbs as the energy from protein lasts for a longer drawn out period than carbs and it is good for wieght loss as it gives you a more full feeling...

You will not be catabolic first thing in the morning, unless you've neglected to eat for the previous 36 hours or so.

What you read is a poor understanding of gluconegogenesis. It's not going to happen unless you force your body to go there, which means just about completely running out of your glycogen/energy reserves and that's not going to happen unless you're either starving or have monster cardio sessions. What happens when you sleep (the short term fast) is your body will use up whatever glucose is floating around first, then your liver will break down whatever glycogen/energy it has to supply the body. As for catabolism, it's always happening. Your body is constantly being broken down and rebuilt. So, it's a balancing act between the two. Don't worry about losing your muscles unless you're in a severe calorie deficit for a long time.

Note the above - Things go funny when you're body starts to go low on carbs. The body likes it for energy. So, it's a good idea to supply it for energy. Course, the other two are also important. Proteins are the building block. Fat helps with nutrient absorption, has some (limited to protein) building blocks and is the secondary choice for energy.

So you're saying that it is not needed to take a protein shake in the morning along with say a little bit of food such as fruit or oatmeal?
