Tiger Woods bench press
Today on the NBC broadcast of the Arnold Palmer invitational, Johnny Miller made a comment that implied Tiger could bench press 450 lbs. I think he weighs around 185 lbs. I mean, I have heard that he can bench well over 300, which I believe, but how can he train to bench so much when he spends hours upon hours each day hitting golf balls? (over 1,000) I think his arms and chest and shoulders would be tired out from such physical activity. Or maybe he lifts in the morning, but even then, I know I would be spent from so much work the day before.
Figured I would make a thread for golfers/fans of the sport. I dedicated 6 years of my life to better my game to become a competitive player. But then powerlifting took my eye. I have come to realize that golf and heavy lifting don't mix well for my body, so now I'm just an ol' hack :D.
On a side note, Johnny Miller has been known to make some comments that don't really make sense. For instance, in the second or third round of the 2004 CA Championship at Doral, he took one look at Craig Parry's swing and said something like, "Ben Hogan would cringe at the sight of that." Edit: That was the same tournament that Parry won by holing out a shot on the 72nd hole... So yeah...
Long thread, I know, but what y'all think?

ive heard 315, but no proof
-
-
There's absolutely no way in the world. It's not even worth discussing.
-
most likely an assumption. it's johnny miller after all
-
I'd like to see it rather than just hear it from someone
-
Tis bull****.
Think about the risk/reward ratio of building that kind of pressing strength for a pro golfer.... aside from all the other obvious reasons why it's bs.
-
hes said it himself that benches just over 300, ill try and find the quote

Probably some sort of bench where he goes halfway down or bounces it, there's just no way that is possible just by looking at his physique. That being said, he is still strong for a golfer.
-
I did some searches and all I can find is 300 is an estimate from people who have seen him workout. Hmmm....
-
I'd believe 315, but 450...? No way, impossible.

Off-topic but here's Tank Abbott, the old UFC fighter. Not exactly competition form but still impressive.

And while I'm at it, here's Larry Allen. He might be getting a little bit of help from the other guys but if so, it didn't look like much.

i'd like to note, before I make my comment, that I am a PGA Golf Professional:
I have inside information, and I know he quarter squats 500, and benches just over 400 without touching his chest. He does one of those.... go down to a 3 board height and back up.
Before everyone rips into him, you have to understand, he trains for his sport (i guess). IMO, oly lifts would be better. But top athletes don't need to train correctly because their talented.

X2
He can't bench 450. Period.

I've heard people say this, but have never seen any documentation of this admission. Hell, I heard an interview with him about 6 months ago, where he was still claiming a 600 lb bench press. When did he admit the plates were fake?
-
he is a great athlete but i dont think hes that great
-
He benches 450 in the same way that I play a round of golf in the mid 50's.
-
I could see a 300 lb one rep max kind of thing. But no way 400. BS.
-
He most likely benches 275-315. There's no way in hell 450 though. 450 bench is a very specific goal, he couldn't train for that and be one of the best golfers in the world at the same time...

Would have never guessed :D.
-
I doubt he could even do 300. Possible, but doubtful.
I don't think many golfers could bench 225. Golfing and physical strength aren't exactly closely related.
-
Ive heard/read 400 before I'll try to find the article that I got it from.

I saw on tv the other day a professional long driver whose hobby is powerlifting.
-
i heard he lifts more than most pro golfers, and im sure he is strong/naturally athletic.
300 seems like a bit of a stretch though, how tall is he?
