I always do cardio on an empty stomach but I plan meals in advance if I'm lifting. Otherwise I'm just not going to lift as much.
I guess the major thing you're leaving out in your post is why he says you shouldn't eat before lifting in the morning as compared to in the daytime evening--or does he say that you shouldn't eat before lifting at all?
Oh, and if it doesn't work for you, don't do it.

I work out every morning on a empty stomach. Empty w/ out food that is. Here is what I've been doing....
4:30am
200mg caffeine
500mg PrimaForce Lean Green
10 mg Yohimbine HCL
1.5 - 2g ALCAR
start sipping 1/2 Gallon jug w/ 6 scoops Xtend plus 10g extra glutamine
4:45am - begin workout and continue sipping Xtend throughout
6:00 - 6:15 - finish workout and Xtend if any and take 5 g creatine
6:30 - 6:45 - first meal of the day
I have great energy for the workout and my lifts have been going up. Give it a try!!! At bare minimum you can opt for Caffeine & Xtend only!!
im afraid caffine is a no-no for me i have a bad reaction to it, i got BSN NO-XPLODE before thinking i was gonna lift every weight in sight.... when i took it my muscles went weak, i got very dizzy and started seeing stars , i get the same effect off coffee, even tea...
in the book it says to workout first thing in the morning on empty stomach....
I think i will eat cereal + toast + 75g protein shake + 2 bananas 1 hour before I go lifting in the morning.... just so i dont run outta energy during my training.... thanks for the tips guys
usually i'll eat a couple slices of bread and/or an apple right before i workout...nothing too heavy but something to help me get through the workout.
i used to work out in the mornings before eating, but whenever i trained legs i got really bad stomach aches. not something that i couldnt push through but im a pretty strong believer that pains that aren't soreness or tiredness tend to mean something, so in cliff form:
I always eat something before I lift now.
Oh and cardio on an empty stomach= ok
aren't you a pseronal trainer ? you should of a clue about this have a banana before you work out or take NO a energy product before you start working out
i eat nothing when i workout in the morining i just pop in my animal pump and i lift i go heavy and i have no problem benn working for me good been seeing alot of results
I get up around 7:30 and have a piece of toast, and egg, and some skim milk. I lift around 8:15 or so and feel just fine for the workout. If you felt like crap while eating nothing, you might as well try eating something.
everyone is different and like the last guy aid if no eating gives you no energy then eat somthing. At the end of the day your trying to builld mass so it dosnt matter just do what your comfortable with.
I started training in the mornings about a year ago.
I've tried four things/meals:
1) No food...
I would have a great start but in the last 30 mins of a 1h20min workout I'd feel very flat. The exercises I did at that time suffered.
2) 2 Boiled egg whites plus 1 heaped tablespoon of brown rice (prepared nite before)...
When I changed to this I felt a big difference and had more energy. My workouts definately improved.
3) 1 Boiled egg white (prepared nite before)...
This is what I'm doing now. I tried this after a 3 week break (holiday) because I became sick of the cold rice. So far so good. It's definately better than no food but I think the rice gave me a bit more energy at the end of a workout.
4) A Meal Replacement Powder (EAS Myoplex)...
Nowhere near as good as a meal but better than nothing. Not great if you're doing squats because you just want to fart the whole time.
SUMMMARY: Use number (2) when in a bulking phase and number (3) when cutting (summertime :))
Hope it helps,
G

yes i am a personal trainer but there are 2 ways to lift .... the offical way which i am qualified ---- and the bodybuilders way... which they do not teach in great detail in the PT courses as some things bodybuilders do are unhealthy and can be dangerous... this is one topic that is obviously very contravertial as the ppl in my gym say to eat before a workout but the likes of Mr. olympia (jay cutler / big ron etc.) all say to workout first thing in the morning on an empty stomach... thats why I have started this thread to see what works for different ppl
how good are you with the footbag and do u have vids?

id hate to workout on an empty stomach but thats just me,
at least take some BCAAs and some protien though to get out of the catabolic state you wake up in.

im not doubting you but i find it hard to believe that jay cutler would give out that advice. that is probably the worst advice i've ever heard on bb.com(serious). never, ever do that. you'll be catabolic, lethargic, will have a shietty workout and worst of all rob nutrients from your existing muscles to fuel your workout that morning.

wow.
after I finished I fapped again
that just sounds stupid for someone who is trying to gain muscle...
im not saying you should eat a LOT of food but you should definitely have something in your stomache. feeling hungry and weak is NOT how you wanna feel in the gym.
I think its bad even for a cardio workout. u need your carbs and you need some energy to burn. i have 1st-hand experience in this: i went on a long bikeride with a friend (1st time on a bike in like a year or 2). the first 15 miles were easy and we had breakfast and then we stopped somewhere for lunch. then we took off and there wasnt a single place to eat for the next 30+ miles. i didnt reallize it at the time, but i was less than a mile from the destination point and i had almost passed out because there was NO food in my stomache and my body needed energy.
the same thing happenned to me like 5 years earlier(stupid of me to make the same mistake twice lol). only i DID pass out. kinda. but luckily people came by and gave me an apple and a sandwich. as soon as i ate that, i had MORE than enough energy to finish the trail. point is: u need food, starving yourself is a bad idea wether you're trying to gain or loose weight

yea thats exactly what happenned to me on that bike ride. my body ate up all my back muscle to find energy to make the rest of that trail. i think i lost bicep muscle too.

ha, I know
If you?re really trying to loose weight it might be ok to workout on an empty stomach. But if you feel weak you should definitely have something like, a Whey shake in the morning with fruit, or an egg.
Train on,
Mitch

cheers dudes, just woke up there (love the footbag vid by the way, dat gal has skills)
So far i've eatn 2 bananas, cereal, a 75g protein shake, 1 tlbs flaxseed oil and 2 slices of whole grain toast.... a big difference from yesterday... calves and shoulders today
i like a good meal though with fats, carbs and protein. shake type stuff just doesnt cut it for me.
I have this book, it's great. But where does it say to lift on an empty stomach? He says to exercise on an empty stomach in "What does your Dr Look like Naked" if you're only trying to burn fat. But in this book he goes into great detail of the importance of pre-workout meal when lifting to gain... whole chapter on it.
Jay cutler says its good cause he works out at like 5am
