Help me solve a Math Problem? For Macros.

I just made my bodybuilding first meal, that I am going to upload to my blog.

It's called Gourmet Noodles!

I have worked out that the 712 Calorie meal has:


34.3g Protein
34.4g Fat
62.7g Carb

Now, I can see clearly, just using some basic logic at a glance -- it is very roughly:

Just under 1/4 Protein
Just under 1/4 Fat
Just over 1/3 carbs

However, I need to know how to work out the exact numbers, like WITH MATHS.

I don't now how to do it, because I'm basically math-stupid.

I'm a complete mathi-ing idiot.

I intend to upload a whole HEAP of meals along with the percentages. So I need to know the formula for how I work this out.

Please take it easy, as I will have trouble following if you use technical math terms.

However, if you explain it like I am 4, I should be able to eventually get my head around that 1 formula (with the use of a calculator) and be able to figure out all the other meals :)

Just make sure percentages add up to 110% (any less is for quitters) and all will be good

Amount of thing/the total amount *100 = the % of thing

Example
27g protein in something that weighs 225 g
27/220 then times that answer by 100
27/220*100= 12.3%

Pretty sure you don't need to know percentages to add up macros! But for your entertainment... there you go.

Before you start calculating...remember that the caloric value assigned to any food is not going to be exact, so trying to pin down precise percentages will likely be futile.

It is generally accepted to use net values of 4, 4 & 9 calories per gram for protein, carbs & fats, but those aren't exact numbers as more or less energy can be lost during the digestive process, depending on the type of food being digested and the person digesting it.

But to answer your question...

34.3g Protein = ~137 calories (~20%)
34.4g Fat = ~309 calories (~44%)
62.7g Carb = ~250 calories (~36%)

Total calories = ~696 calories (100%)

That’s what oldfarttom explained in his post. 34.3 divided by 131.4, with the answer multiplied by 100, will give you the answer to your first item.

Rinse and repeat.

A couple guys showed you how to calculate those percentages as you asked but the way you presented it, however, is not how it is normally figured. As 401Delta mentioned above the calories for fat macros are different than protein and carbs and that needs to be accounted for or at least that is the normal way it is shown by % of total calories. 401Delta showed the answer but didn't show all the math so here it is:
34.3g Protein x 4 calories/g = 137.2 calories
34.4g Fat x 9 calories/g =309.6 calories
62.7g Carb x 4 calories/g = 250.8 calories

Total calories = 697.6
Protein 137.2 / 697.6 = .20 x 100 = 20%
Fat 309.6 / 697.6 = .44 x 100 = 44%
Carb 250.8 / 697.6 = .36 x 100 = 36%

So the fat content is actually 44% but if you did it as you presented and only figure it with the macros the fat would come out to 26% (34.4/131.4 x 100) which is incorrect.
