Anybody here experimented with paleo? If so thoughts and opinions...
Experimented with Paleo on and off for the last 5 years.
Have done the whole 30 and now just apply the principles loosely in terms of avoiding most processed foods and gluten as it bloats me up.
My thoughts and opinion is that overall the general principles are great for health and for cutting fat.
I did find it hard to bulk using a strict paleo approach and needed to bring in my rices, oats etc.
I also find fanatical paleo followers very hard to deal with and I don't really think a strict paleo approach is sustainable for most people.
It also cops a very hard rap on here so prep your angus for a bunch of bros calling you a paleo tard.

BWC hit the nail on the head. I do paleo for the most part, but since I'm trying to put on weight I include stuff like fruit juices, cream of rice/rice, and sometimes gluten-free bread. Strict paleo kills hunger and you really have to set a stopwatch and eat on a timer if you are trying to gain. I feel much better not eating gluten and junk food, and have been eating this way for the most part since fall 2007. It should be a starting point though, because not everyone thrives on paleo. It all depends on your goals, so what are they?

I personally think it's mostly silly, at least the most ardent version. There's a reason they get called "paleotards"
However not all that espouse the idea are like that. Here is a site that not only believes in "ancestral eating" but there is a ton of information on Dr Guyenet's blog, there's a lot you can learn about many subjects here. GL

Yes- found it great for general weight loss. Not sure I would use it post "initial" weight loss, i.e., for a bulk/cut routine, but I think a lot of the fundamentals are sound on the philosophy.
Other fundamentals are whacked though, especially as it pertains to people who expect high levels of returns on their dietary effects on high level performance. There are just times when "non-paleo" foods are superior for your needs.
I feel food is a tool. Your diet is a toolbox. I don't rule out anything. Instead, I make my food meet my needs, not the other way around (my needs be adversely affected by avoiding a food that might be essential for a special purpose- i.e, a processed or simple carb... or dairy, etc...)
This morning, I had an old fashioned donut. Why? I could, and I am having a hard time hitting bulk calories per day, and, it was in the morning, right before a workout, so why worry...

Wanting to cut fat and lose some more lbs
Food avoidance is unnecessary, and has no benefit which is obvious to anyone with a grasp on nutrition fundamentals.
People seem to get on their high horse with paleo which can be annoying.
There is no reason sugar or grains can not be included in any diet.

It's unnecessarily exclusionary, and has no proof of it's claims of superiority.
Some of it most ardent supporters are little more than hucksters who present a "problem," and then offer a "solution" for $79.95 a month autoship.

I tired it during the Châtelperronian era, but that was ages ago.
From a health perspective there is nothing wrong with eating more vegetables, fruits, protein & healthy fats, I wouldn't do it just because "caveman did it" however

This is funny that a thread like this popped up, as I have been trying to do a lot of research comparing the IIFYM guys and paleo approach.
I am no where near the physique of 90% of the people that will reply in this thread, but I can tell you that I have lost 60 LBs by following a paleo lifestyle (300 lbs to 240 now). So I am getting closer I spose. I did a lower carb (under 75 g a day with a refeed every once in a while) approach and followed a 90% strict paleo diet with regards to dairy. I think it is a great starting point for people who need to lose a lot of weight or get healthy.
However after watching some bodybuilding youtubers and reading a lot of what Alan Aragon posts and talks about, I am going to try his approach. Like others have said, I will use paleo as a GUIDELINE and will be gluten free as much as possible because I do have a gluten intolerance. So, I am going to try the macros thing and see how I do. I love learning and tweaking my diet to see if I can actually get a decent physique so I am always up for suggestions.
I think Paleo gets a bad reputation because of the elitist dip$hits who sound like they are in a cult. This includes a lot of crossfit nerds and people who will push it as the end all be all.

That's akin to comparing an iphone 4s with a suspension bridge; it's largely meaningless and suggests misinterpretation of the key concepts. IIFYM, or "Flexible Dieting" as it's quickly becoming due to confusion about the acronym, and a rational approach to the ideals that have morphed into paleo are not mutually exclusive. In fact, they work quite well in conjunction for both general health and body composition.
The important thing is understanding that you don't [i]have[/i] to "eat like a caveman" in the strictest possible sense to have a minimally processed "natural" diet, and you don't [i]have[/i] to fill your discretionary calories with junk food when flexible dieting.

As others have said, "paleo" gets a bad rap due to a few extreme folks who want to run around in loincloths and howl at the moon while gnawing raw meat off the bone. Unfortunately, critics focus more on the fringe elements rather than the basic [i]intent[/i] of the diet, which is just to consume the wholesome natural foods that our bodies have evolved to eat rather than follow dietary recommendations derived from bad science (Ancel Keys, diet-heart hypothesis, saturated fats are deadly, etc) and the powerful lobbyists behind the food manufacturing industry. Of course, a lot of that gets lost in the noise created by certain "gurus" and critics alike.
Some adherents are more extreme in their restrictions of certain foods and even try to emulate the behaviors of a long-gone era. But sensible people realize we live in a modern age where we have a variety of food options available and to use their own discretion and tolerances when making dietary choices. Personally, I feel much better and have more energy when my diet revolves around foods like fresh meat, veggies, eggs, and full-fat milk and butter, than I ever did when eating frozen mini-pizzas, Chef Boyardee, and hot dogs. But I'll be damned if I'm not going to dive headfirst into a bowl of ice cream, a greasy pizza, or some chocolate cake once in a while.
That being said, eating a more "traditional" diet (I don't like using the word "paleo") has dramatically improved my acid reflux and severe bruxism (teeth grinding), both of which I suffered from for years.

Then paleo would be a good approach. Try it out and see, just be sure to not go low carb, include ample amounts of tubers, rice, and fruit to up the carbs.

The only way paleo will help you get lean is if you hit your macros. If I freestyled paleo I'd get fat.
