Food in Canada much more expensive.

On a recent holiday to the U.S I was floored to see how inexpensive the food is in the states. A 2 L of pepsi up here is like $3 vs $.99 bannanas here .99 lb there .33 Dollar menus? What is that for real? not to mention our dollar is almost at parity so why? Supplements, vitamins and healthy eats are out of the question for some folks here. I don't mean to be rude but I was thinking wow no wonder they've got a bad rap. I was reading a forum post saying the average household spends about $120 week on food. We are an average household and our bill is around &850-1000 month. I do buy healthy foods and nobody in my family is overweight so it's not like we eat too much. I think part of the problem is how do you stay away from all the junk when it's so dirt cheap. Not to mention if all your friends are getting fat too, what the hell go for it. Then there's the booze. Do we really need cheap beer in every 7-11? 12 pack of beer in Canada $25.00 no joke. ( I do live in B.C.) so a little pricier but again it's all about convienance and price they WANT you to buy this s... So It was a little shocking for me to see. I was in awe thinking damn I would save so much money living down here but I would probably be 20 lbs larger too. I dont want to offend anyone, Im just saying what I saw.

I live in Canada too, and I agree that food is more expensive here. It's still pretty cheap though, compared to europe or Japan for example. Food in the US is just ridiculously cheap, too cheap in my opinion.

If your bill is 1k/month, then that's kind of expensive for up here, unless you have a bunch of kids. I'm in Ontario, not BC so I can't say about any differences there, but three people could probably subsist off of 700/month here comfortably, and significantly less if you really went for the deals and farmer's markets.

Beer doesn't cost that much for a 12 pack unless you are buying nice beer. I can get beer for 18 for a 12 pack here, which I think is the same as out west. We tax the hell out of alcohol up here though.

The cost savings of living in the Us are partially offset by the cost of health insurance, which is way more per person that we pay out of taxes for the service in Canada.

As a Canadian student studying in England. I can assure you this....food in England is ALOT more expensive than Canada so we should be grateful for what we have ;). Even though we may be more than the US, I'm still appalled by the prices whenever I go grab groceries over here in the UK...

I agree food here is more expensive but I find if I limit myself to the basic foods (chicken breast, tuna, oats, brown rice, beans, a few greens) my grocery bill is usually below $80/week. It's when I venture into the other stuff that it starts getting pricey!

Also, I have to be very careful where I buy my chicken for instance, one week it'll be 1.99/Lb while other times, it could be as high as 4.99/Lb so my weekly intake would cost me more than double.

Anyway, I hear ya!!

I do have 2 boys who play hockey. We also live neat a ski resort. I should add that we almost always eat at home and I pack lunches for the kids.

Your probably shopping at the wrong stores. I bet you shop at Pricemart, Save-on, IGA, Buylowfoods, ... when you should be shopping at Superstore.

I could show you high priced food... ****ing ice-cold, money-sucking country..
