post workout craving
why does one crave sugar after a workout? what causes this? I would really appreciate a scientific answer with as much detail as you know. I figure it has something to do with the glycogen your muscles lose during the workout, but not really sure. I will rep for help with this. thanks guys.

If your work is anaerobic, you are using almost all sugar as energy. Your brain functions on sugar...so you crave it.

I have never craved sugar after a workout. The only thing I crave is a protein shake. I don't think I know anyone who has craved sugar after a workout or maybe i just didn't know they were craving it. " Sugar is da Devil ".

If you haven't eating a high complex carbohydrate, yet balanced (some protein & some fat) feeding within at least 90 minutes (or whatever your body prefers) before working out and you don't drink sugar during your workout, your blood sugar will dip extra low.
It would looks something like 12 Noon on the following graph, since your body likes to remain in homeostasis your will crave the sugar that is missing in your body.

Again, to avoid this, I drink Gatorade during my workouts if I haven't eaten properly before... I'm not 100% sure but I think caffeine before your workout can mess w/ your blood sugar as well...

I seen on the morning national news the other morning that one only needs 10 teaspoons of sugar a day. How many grams would that be?

Its because working out used up all of your self-discipline for the day, so you want to give in and eat that sugar that you've always wanted to eat. If you hadn't worked out, your self-discipline would silence your body's cries for sugar, but since you worked out, your self-discipline cannot hold the surging sugar craving back much longer.
