depends on what your goals are.
For overall health my bottle says 1 to 3 a day.
however I use a much higher dose to help my joints. I take near 10-12 grams a day and I have ZERO joint pain anymore.
And my blood pressure has dropped 20 points since going from 3/day to 10
So this one cap a day isnt really near enough? I am looking for joint relief too.
Im going with what Strength said, i use 9 grams daily.

10-12 grams defined by the bottle, or 10-12 grams combined EPA/DHA, which according to my pills would be like 25 pills per day?

Given those numbers, I would take 2 servings per day at most on a long term basis. In the short term (say a month) if you had a specific goal I'd go up to 3-4 servings per day.
How much epa/dha do I need at 18, 178lbs? I was going to start taking 6 caps a day, which combined is 1.8g epa/dha.

when people talk about grams of fish oil are they taking the combined content of both epa and dha?
e.g. M caps are 330 EPA 220 DHA. Combined that is 550,
so if i take 10 caps a day that is 5.5g of fish oil?

That would 5.5 grams of EPA/DHA.
There is other "marine oil" in there as well. If you notice, the EPA/DHA content usually accounts for about 1/4 of the total complex, i.e., a serving size for example is 2 pills, 2 pills = 1 serving. 1 serving = 2000 mg of Marine Oil Complex, of that 2000 mg only 500 mg of it is EPA/DHA.
Necessary dose of EPA/DHA for best effect is likely around 1-2g daily. 3 is excessive.

I like 2g combined EPA/DHA. Haven't seen much greater effect beyond that.

Most oil caps are 1.2 gm in total oils. The typical omega 3 content is in the 30% range.

A person would need to specify which they mean, just for the very reason you brought up.
In your case, you're taking 12 gm of fish oil, 5.5gm of EPA/EHA.
