Definitely, I also had been accepted at La trobe, perharps I should have gone there, something tells me it would have been considerably better managed. Some of my teachers had not tought in a few years, rusty as hell in teaching.
Basically for my first semester I had advanced comparate finance/ and advanced research methods. contracry to what I though advance corporate finance ended up being all about "does corporate structure matter" 10 weeks of that, going through 3-4 journals a week. I thought it was going to be more about things like valuating projects in the real world or something of the sort, not so acadamic bull**** that got us nowhere. The other unit, just learnt about regression analysis (coming from a non economics backgroun)
Second semester units, had advance financial analysis, which again ended up academic as ****, testing the CAPM model and behavioural finance... urgh. As an elective I choose international finance, which ended up being pretty low level, close to undergrad + a bit of regression analysis... again academic not useful for out there.
I had some friends do derivatives for their thesis and also chose derivatives for their electives. Probably the most useful path in honours. Regardless I don't see much future in derivatives unless you are a algorithm coder. I think it was UBS that was firing a lot of people from their derivative desk and changing them for algorithms.
Anyhow, I decided to move on from commerce/finance, the indusry is ****ed, too much competition and my heart is simply not there. Applied for physiotherapy now.
Interesting - 2 semesters of coursework is unusual as far as I'm aware. We have 1 semester of coursework and then a 10,000 word thesis in the second semester.
Without meaning to be a University snob (I'm a pretty big critic of USyd) I do think the size of the University and the funding of the business school probably makes a big difference. I wouldn't do honours anywhere except USyd, UNSW, Melbourne or ANU simply for the reasons you mentioned - not comprehensive enough and lacking the staff with sufficient experience and industry exposure.
It certainly is moving more and more towards the algorithmic side, but that is itself still only a relatively small part of finance. Parts of the industry are ****ed, I'm not overly concerned, I feel the people who will have a LOT of trouble are those who coast through University on mediocre marks and then they will land a job simply because they have a very generalist degree. The world isn't like that anymore!
Physiotherapy sounds most interesting - a couple of my friends are doing medicine/biomedical sciences etc so some of the discussions at the gym are pretty interesting!

Well, the way it was split is that the thesis was half of the overall course grade, so 50%, so theoretically you spend half the time doing coursework in each semester.
I most definitely think that the level of the university will dictate what you get, I just didn't expect Curtin to be so low to be honest. For what I had gathered researching last year, those universities had definitely a higher level, more competitive and better recognition.
If you are good, capable, driven, with a good cv (vacation programs, extra curriculars etc) you will do alright. Definitely a lot more competition in the east coast compared to the west thought, that would make me a bit uneasy. I personally just lacked the interest to commit what was needed to succeed in finance. Not saying I am lazy or a bad student, just realised that my competitive advantage would be in another field (physio). Just wish I had realised sooner.
