I'm 6 foot 338 pounds and I need to know if this is even doing anything. How much should I walk for it to be effective? I can't really go faster than 2.5 at my weight.

of course it is. all exercise is beneficial.
its not exactly about 'how much' you do, your diet is a very important factor.
Run more miles fatty, but yesh its a good start but build it up to 20 a 30 miles, with a average speed of 6 miles a hour...

+1
Just do it every day and you'll be golden.
Figure out your diet. Then just do a little more each day on the exercise front. Before you know it you will be jogging then running.
at 338, the first 50lbs, if not more, will fall right off quickly. get your diet in check too

I am currently walking at a 3mph pace for 1 or two hours every night which theoretically for me should burn between 300 and 600 hundred calories every session , so I highly recommend it in addition to any other more intense cardio you might be able to do.
That's pretty much all you can do for now, OP. As you get lighter, it will get easier for you to pick-up the pace.
When you least know it, you'll be running a marathon.

So hes supposed to run over a marathon/day for 5 hours?

^^ That.
I was 470 and could barely walk half a mile...concentrate hard on your diet and the pounds will fall off. Before I joined the gym I was up to walking 8 miles a day...now running 2-3 daily. Make the diet your top priority.
I was heavier than you when I stated, and all I did was walk and calorie deficit, and that led me to 199 lbs. started from 349. Just do it and be careful with your knees.

Dude your starting off good. Your not gonna do any good if you hurt yourself. Slowly increase your pace as your body allows. right now the #1 thing you can do is good diet.

Wow. This right here.
I wish I would have followed my own advice when I first started - but I didn't know any better back then. As a result, I ended with popping and crunching knees (very unnerving sensation, trust me) and that didn't go away until I declined significantly in weight.
Don't try to do too much early on. IMHO, don't try jogging until you dip below 270lbs. And forget about running until you're well below 240. This is just from my own personal experience in trying to preserve my knees as much as possible. HOWEVER, you might be able to get away with trying either running or jogging at a higher weight if you do so on a treadmill since there's extra cushioning on those.
even at 240 my knees hurt running, not worth it.
OP you are an exception to the calorie per mile rule, you have to carry around a bit more weight so its also going to take more effort.
If you have access to a recumbent bike, it may be better in the meantime. YOU can probably use around 300 calories in 2 miles of just walking, if not maybe a little more.
Spend some good money on decent running shoes even if its not for a long duration.

I was 338 last April and now am at 249. Walking is fantastic. Walk as fast as you can but not so its uncomfortable. Get yourself a cadence for each step like "fast, strong, lean, healthy" and get into the zen.
The answer is yes. 2.5mph for 90 mins or as long as you can go will drop the weight. Your cardio will increase quickly. Mix in a some jogging bursts when you feel the need. Walk 5 days a week.
I'd lift also so your not a bag of skin when your done. Plus you probably have decent muscle lugging around the 338, so keeping as much of that muscle as possible would be my goal.
Good luck with the walking, the majority of my exercise is the 2.5 mile walk to work, then a jog home at around 5mph. Sometimes I think the hardest part about it is the mental barrier rather than the physical. With walking and jogging the past month and a diet that started only a week ago, I've managed to loose 9lbs as of today. Keep at it and I'm sure you'll soon see the rewards.
It's great you're starting somewhere. Congrats on taking the leap on your life change.
Watch your diet, and lift. It'll be daunting being in the gym w/ your body, surrounded by thinner people but you can either a) back off in shame or b) use it to picture your goals and motivate yourself.
Hint: the right answer is B. hahaha
Good luck man.
I was 300 last year.
Rather than walking/running and risking damage to my joints, I took up swimming.
Burns more calories and hits more muscles too.
Hey man, what sort of distance or speed would you need to swim at for results? I'm a pretty decent swimmer but I don't go very often so that might be preferable to running for the meantime.
