Couldn't tell you, but I have had acid reflux for a while now (it comes and goes). I do think that some of the ancillary activities may aggravate it (eating all the time, drinking lots of water, etc.).
not certain on the details, but weightlifters are at a higher risk to develop it.
If you want a quick fix just drink some milk. Its a base so it nuetralizes acid reflux.

With serious acid reflux nothing helps. I used to keep a jar of Tums by my bed, but it did very little. Even PPIs like Tagamet and Prilosec didn't work.
I've had it for years, caused by a hiatal hernia. Really intense lifting does in fact aggrevate it. I'm on prescription meds to control the acid. Works most all the time, except when I am really hitting it hard. Not sure why though.
One other thing. Milk is only provides temp relief. The lactic acid in milk will eventually bring it back with a vengence. Get an OTC acid controller. It will help with all but the worse cases.

I've always assumed it's the bizaar, fear-factor core diets that we keep.
Do you guys really think it because of actual lifting? Like core strength causes a pressure on the internal organs?
Found this:
GERD occurs more frequently during exercise than at rest, and can be a cause of chest pain or abdominal pain during exertion.39 One study found that increased intensity of exercise resulted in increased reflux in both trained athletes and untrained people.40 In another study, running produced more reflux than less jarring activities, such as bicycling, while weight training produced few reflux symptoms.41 Eating just before exercise has been found to further aggravate GERD.42 43 On the other hand, a recent survey found that people who participate in little recreational activity were more likely than active people to be hospitalized for GERD.44 It makes sense for people with GERD to use exercise as part of a healthy lifestyle, perhaps choosing activities that are less likely to cause reflux symptoms.
yes, that's a proven fact; wegiht lifters have more stomach problems than "regular" people
thanks thats helpfull info, i dont think i can weight train anymore cause i have gerd and im certain now that weight lifting is not helping the situation. i have a really bad post nasal drip which is driving me ****ing cazy and i believe is irritation from gerd. It depresses me that i have a $3000 free weight system which will probably gather dust now until i sell it. **** life, **** this world, **** bad health, **** everything.
I find stretching out my abs really well helps my digestion in general. Have any of you tried digestive enzymes? I've given them to my dad who has chronic indigestion and other chronic digestion like sour stomach, heartburn. He tells me that he feels better with less indigestion when he takes them. Also oregano pills are apparently good for digestion.
Dude don't be so hard on yourself, don't give up. Goto the health food store and ask them for something thats good for digestion, if it doesn't work, try something else, never give up! For your post nasal drip, try some vitamin c with bioflavoids, its suppose to be a good anti-histamine which i will be trying myself for postnasal drip under my doctors reccomendation.

if you let that stop you then you weren't meant to train - i've got SERIOUS intestonal problems (not lifting related; genetics....been shafted ever since i was a child).....I wake up EVERY morning feeling sick as **** and like i've been run over by a truck. A GOOD day for me is if I don't vomit. EVERY meal I eat or drink is painful, both mentally and phsyically - my body wants to reject any sustenance fed to it.
I will literally take 40minutes to eat lunch....I will sit there through the pain and glare at the food and force it down....and then repeat in 2-3hrs 5-7x/day. (except on weekends, then i break and only eat 3x a day :D )
I'm dead beat each day, somedays I can barely get out of bed between the pills and the stress my body is under.
I have NO repreive, this is 24/7, and has been constant for the last 4yrs...every single damn day - and yet I still lift. No matter how much agonizing pain it is and how much my body wants to break, I still lift because I have the will and determination. I force teh food into my body because I'll be damned if I get laid up in the hospital and can't eat. (it goes along the lines that if I let my body get the best of me and take it easy for a while and don't eat, it'll literally take me 2hrs to finish a meal then if I try to get it to eat)
Okay, sob story over; point is is that if you were meant to do it your will power to overcome any pain and will drag you along.

Thats very true but if what your doing is only exacerbating the problem rather than improving it then it probably not such a good idea despite incredible will power.
I have the same exact problem. I've been doing heavy deadlifts for over 10 years now. I used to weight 175 and was deadlifting 420 for reps. Then it was like it was hit by a train first of June. I woke up gasping for air, choking on reflux. I've been going to the doctor and GI and having tests done on me. I now weight 133 and I'm struggling to hold on to it. I haven't been able to eat because of the reflux and the postnasal drip. I feel like I am always choking, horrible. I'm trying to narrow it down to maybe a food allergy, but I know that the deadlifting has contributed to this. In fact, I did have warning signs. Everytime I would deadlift, it would feel like my stomach was coming up into my throat. It finally caught up to me. I hope we're able to find relief soon and get back to lifting. I really miss it.
I've heard people swear by apple cider vinegar to cure acid reflux. People say that it'll completely cure it. I've never tried it but you should give it a try and see if it helps.
Acid-reflux and heartburn are common diseases that occurs mostly for fat persons..You can know more information at http://www.cureyourheartburn.com
i was diagnosed with pre cancer in my throat partially from gerd 6 years ago and was prescribed 40mg prilosec a day and 300mg zantac a day and when i cleaned up my diet and got back to lifting 3.5 years ago i have been able to reduce my dose to 20mg of prilosec a day and i'm fine with that. no i don't believe any workouts make gerd worse and to the contrary i got better when i began lifting.
Ever thought it could be IBS related?
Reflux is how IBS manifested itself for me.
Aks yourself, hows your stress levels?
My acid reflux flares up mostly when I run. So, I've been taking Nexium twice a day everyday which seems to help. Also, just before a run I take one Pepcid complete which really helps me. I don't feel any of the reflux symptoms when I use this combination. I don't usually need to take anything when I swim or ride my bike. I definitely don't need anything when I lift weights. Hope this helps.

It doesn't. The question was asked 5 years ago.
Most bodybuilders have thin waists and small stomach when stuffed full can't expand due to tight muscles so only way is up
