i generally take about 2-3 shakes per day, each anywhere from 25 to 45 grams of protein. am i messing up my kidney if i overdo it on the protein intake?

just drink plenty of water, you will be fine.
the only thing you should be worried about is the sugar content in those shakes, if you are taking in a bunch of simple sugars like that throughout the day you might get fat, but that is all at your discretion.

alright, substitute the word "shakes" there with the word "tuna" and substitute the word "take" with the word "eat". Now does what you said make any sense now that you've done that? Probably not. Remember, a protein shake is just a conveient way to consume decent to high quality protein, no more, no less. You do not take protein, you eat it.
Taking 2-3 protein shakes a day is fine, but try to get your protein from food sources as much as possible.

I've found it most beneficial to consume anywhere between 30 - 40 grams of whey with dextrose (white gj) post workout, seperate of course. I try not to substitute whey for a meal any other time in the day like one of the posters said above, there are more quality proteins that will provide your body with a steady stream of aminos (eggs). Which part are you questioning?
i said why is it that you have to eat "real food" protein shakes are real food anyways, they have sugars carbohydrates proteins fats, thats food
you can get any kind of protein in a shake too
milk, egg, whey, soy, ect and some u usually cant get in normal day food

I use the term "real food" in reference to unprocessed foods. I'm saying that meats and vegatables, which are valuable sources of vitamins and minerals, phytochemicals, etc., should be used as often as possible. I use protein shakes throughout the day, but only to make-up what I can't get (protein wise) from the basic food groups.

The digestion is different for each of those sources. Throughout the day you want a constant supply of aminos. It's generally accepted that whey absorbs pretty quickly and is best post workout. str8flexed has a good reference article about protein sources. Heres the link..

bump, try to eat food food, but whey is better than nothing when you can't hack it.
Kevin Kasper (former Denver Broncos wide receiver, who now plays for Arizona) gets all his meals from "shakes". Seriously. He consumes no solid food...at all...never. He's been doing this since he was 16 years old. I'm not sure how old he is now...23 maybe 24.
One of the local new stations did a segment on his "interesting diet habit". Nothing but cases of Myoplex in his house. And, in case your wondering, the guy is pretty shredded....not alot of size, but what size he does have is all lean mass.

You should get your protein from a variety of sources so your muscle building efforts won't be limited due to the fact that your whey shake was deficient in one or more amino acids. You can't build a house if you're missing certain bricks. Every protein source has different amino acids and ratios, you should take advantage of this so you can maximize your efforts in the gym.
don't forget that protein still = calories, and too much can = fat.
some say that you can't make fat out of the calories in protein. thats not true, although apparently protein is quite thermogenic and tends to increase your activity, so its not quite as bad as it seems.
if your guts can handle it ( some people get trouble taking in some brands :D ) and you can take the cal's then its no biggy.
Its technically harder on the liver but if you drink plenty of water and have no existing conditions its fine.
well you guys said to reply to my answer that u need to eat real food cuz of aminos, well hell take amino acid pills :)
