on leg days i always start with heavy squats after a proper warm up.
i usually do 5 sets of 3-5 reps as heavy as i can go
will this build hypertrophy aswell as strength in the legs?

It will definately build strength, but as far as im aware, not much hypertrophy.
Try mixing your leg workout up, i do 3 sets of very heavy squats, then 3 sets of high rep squats (12-15) with the highest weight i can do safely...
You tried 5x5?
IMO 5 sets in the 3-5rep range would be great for increasing size and strength.. IF you make sure you eat more.

you don't have to put on weight to gain strength...

ur right, meant to say size is more diet related, although it definately helps both!
While we're having this thread about squats i have a question! To put some serious size on your legs many people warm up then do 1x20 of difficult weight. I've read quite a few stories and have seen many pictures of before and after. My question is if i do 275x20 or 295x20 i would put on some size(i can do 275x20) and would i get stronger or just more conditioned? I want to be able to do 405x10 sometime soon but so far ive done 5x5(Up to ~390) and 225x20 at the end. Any thoughts?

Apparently a guy on this site did 20 rep squats. Legs got huge but his max squat practically stayed thesame.

I need some size on mine haha. 6'6" makes it hard to have bulky anything.
can i have some more info on this 5x5 stuff?
what do you want to know, there's lots of ways to do 5 x 5 but the most prominent ways are
1) do 4 warm up sets and 1 work set and increase when you feel you can
2) do 2 warm up sets and 3 work sets or 5 work sets and increase when you can get all the work sets.
you can google madcow 5 x 5 or dan john 5 x 5 for some good info.
thanks holmes
