I see alot of olympic lifters sniffing ammonia before lifting. Does this increase brief strength? Is this legal? if it does work...is there any where to buy it?

Haven't heard of it, doesn't really sound healthy at all though.

Never heard of this. :S
That's ammonia? Dammit, i've been sniffing chloroform! No wonder my workouts have been suffering.
Ive Seen It A Lot When Guys Are Going For Heavy Sqauts. It Does Something To The Brain Where It Makes You Focus. I Dont Know The Science. Doing This Excessivly Cant Be Good For U. Just Buy Ammonia At The Foodstore. Take A Quick Wiff Before Heavy Squat.
I asked this a while back, no one really heard of it or tried Ammonium carbonate.

is this a sarcasm? cause every first letter is in capital. But, yeah, i saw it on some documentary on Olympic lifter, that sniffing ammonia and like slapping their neck/leg muscles help them lift heavier. It has something to do with concentration. More scientific reasoning would be nice.
Min 1:26 Nose Tork

Seriously Nose Tork is the best, but make sure you keep the bottle a couple inches away from your nose other wise youll be in for a big gasp.
And it makes you kinda mad actually kinda brings out the fight or flight mode only its pure fight
isnt this what you put under peoples noses that are ko'd?

LOL!!!!!!!
There's an amazing deadlift vid of Benni Magnussen(sp) breaking a world record that I watch sometimes. I was never sure wtf he was sniffing... now, I know. I always thought "what a freaking bad ass... this dude is sniffing lifting chalk up his nose" lol.
it helps prevent Vegal Rush caused by an increase in thoracic pressure due to flexion of the abdomen and holding of breath.
Its huge in powerlifting. They come in individual little white packets that you snap and smell. It wakes you big time and give you extreme focus and intensity. Most powerlifters use them every workout.
i made a thread about this a while back b/c i was talking to a power lifter and he said that sniffing/snorting ammonia before a 1rm is a normal thing for almost everyone. he said it gives you a huge adrenaline rush for about 10 secondes
is it legal, is it legal in the UK??
are there any proper write up on it?? can it be harmful...
I have seen a few people sniff some stuff before lifting heavy squats or bench pressing
It's for a brief adrenaline rush. Your body releases adren. to fight off the burn of the smelling salts.
Nose Torq is much stronger than your everyday ammonia caps the football trainers have.
I use it for PR's and at powerlifting meets.
Wait... so people are snapping and huffing packets of ammonia for a short adrenaline rush???
I sniffed ammonia once or twice in science class because we were told not to, and it just burned my nose if i remembered correctly...
Different kind of ammonia/concentration or something? Or I just got an adrenaline rush but didn't notice? (wasn't exactly looking for adrenaline rush symptoms, just trying to get the smell out of my nose)
What is the negative feedback of using it?
I though it was smelling salt or whatever?
And I heard most of them only use it in comp.
They are not "sniffing" it or huffing it like a junky would huff glue or paint. They are just getting a quick whiff of it. Like others said... it wakes you up... it is probably the equivalent of a horse getting kicked with spurs or a cow getting prodded with something. It lights a quick fire under your ass and yes it sort of does get you upset and amped. Navy medical members carry little vials packets which are snapped and placed under someones nose if they are knocked out etc... from first hand experience it will take someone from sleeping to standing straight up on their feet in 2 seconds flat. They will not be happy about it either...
As far as legality and safety... there is nothing illegal about it. Ammonia is a normal cleaning agent. Sure if a cop caught you on the street huffing a can of spray paint he would arrest you... however, as long as you are not abusing a product there is nothing wrong with it. Noone will harrass or judge you for getting a quick whiff to pep you up. Safety wise... I am sure if you stand there and take deep inhalations of ammonia if will cause damage to your lungs and nose. Probably burn all the small hairs etc. Good luck trying to get a deep breath though. The idea behind it is to get a quick sharp whiff of it which will probably make you promptly exhale. I surely would not advise continuous breathing with it under your nose though.
Hope that long winded post helps.
I use nose tork on occasion on big lifts/powerlifting. I wouldn't use it all the time or for regular training bust just my opinion.

Verymuchso, and repped :)
Does it merely pep you up? Or release full adrenaline rushes?

Yes, lots of powerlifters and oly lifters do it. It helps wake you up, increase your CNS awakeness level.
It's legal, search for "smelling salts" or "nose torque"

No, most powerlifters dont' use them every workout. Most powerlifters only use them when maxing out.

As far as the chemical reactions or brain functions etc of it I'm not sure... All I know is it is a kick in the nose.

Actually I have lifted with some of the best and almost every single one of them use it for their last set of squat/dead/bench every workout if it is a max effort day which is often 3 times a week
