So how do the restaurants do it?
I know lots of them use microwaves to cook them, but I tired it today and the skin on the potatoes still tasted like dirt (earth/soil) after I washed them for a good minute or two.
Anybody know how to make these correctly?
FYI: my oven is broken so I cannot use the oven to baked them

As far as I know, they bake them first and then only reheat them in the microwave. I've never heard of anyone "baking" a potato in the microwave. Could be wrong though.

Inside tasted just the same, I'm just trying to get rid of the dirt taste on the skin.
It would be 10x easier to eat if I could get the skin too. Damn small potatoes
actually you can bake it in the microwave but it takes like...5 minutes i believe? as far as the dirt taste goes that is weird because i used to do this for an afterschool snack and they seemed fine. it may just be your potatoes?
How about peeling the damn thing before nuking it?
I nuke bakers all the time, they come out pretty good. Wash yers better next time
I don't do them myself but at my dads he cooks Idaho "baking" potatos in the microwave and they come out perfect. I do not think other potatos will cook so well in the microwave. All he does is put holes in it with a fork and put it on a plate. Are you putting holes in it? Are you putting it up off the bottom?
poke a couple of holes and wrap it up in a damp paper towel. seems to keep it from drying up as much.
Wash them in warm water for 1 minute then using a fork poke the potato roughly 7 times in different place. Then put them into a bowl, cover the potatoes with cling wrap and put on high for 5-10 minutes. And viola you have good taters microwave made.
there are specific potatoes that you can buy that are wrapped in plastic wrap. They are meant to go in the microwave. There are also sweet potatoes that are wrapped in plastic wrap as well. MMMmmmm, microwaveable sweet poatatoes

yes you can
but they always have a weird texture and flavor...
they sell potatoes wrapped and washed to be nuked... but they are just about the same thing...but like $1 each which is alot for a potato
I scrub my potatoes with a brush under some running water before microwaving them. I have never had a dirt taste.

It is just a brush that we use to clean the dishes. Similar to any of these [url]http://www.nextag.com/dish-brush/search-html[/url]
what you might want to try are the packet potatoes, they are perfect. Here at fry's you can get them 1$ a packet, each packet is 4 servings. ALl you need to do is boil water then mix it, takes about 5 minutes total. Tastes great too

Most people here are right...poke holes in them and wrap them in a napkin....the amount of time in the nuker depends on the nuker itself....if you leave them too long you will make a mess....you will get a huge cloud of smoke and nothing but ashes in your microwave...I learned that a long time ago....after I open them up I pour homemade salsa into them....I eat the inside like that....as far as the skin is concerned I like to stuff them with shredded chicken or homemade baked beans....kinda a potato skin taco....tastes really good
At the local supermarket "PriceChopper" I can get microwavable individually wrapped sweet potatoes. They are thoroughly cleaned and wrapped in a very tight plastic film that you microwave them in. Maybe convection ovens offer better results than a regular microwave oven.

Agreed. Gotta scrub the heck outta em under cold water! Gets all the dirt taste right out. Yep, make sure u poke holes in it, or you'll have a mess!
