No.
No.
So how did those body builders of old have such wide rib-cage frames?
gentics
So on average the body builders of old had wider rib-cages genetically? That doesn't seem likely to me...
Pull overs are a exercises commonly prescribed by doctors to treat children with sunken chests (eg rib cages), the cartlidge in the ribcage sets into bone at the end of puberty.
Arnold S. said he used pullovers to widen his rib cage.
The important thing to note is that from the medical perspective most experts believe that this is no longer possible once the ribcage sets at the end of puberty. Arnold believed that expansion is still possible after this point , albeit much slower.
When is puberty actually defined as ending though? I heard being 19 isn't too old...

Arnold made up a lot of crap, for the purpose of causing his opponents to overtrain or train stupidly.
no
Keep in mind that males even after they've stopped growing taller, do broaden for a few years afterwards... Extremities are the first thing to grow larger, and the chest is the last thing.
Myself personally having a large rib cage now...
Between 18 and 23 my chest increased about four inches, and my shoulders broadened about the same. I went from having a "Boyish" looking chest to a manly looking chest. while losing fat. And while I did have some physical labor jobs, it sure wasn't all from built muscle.
I would guess that doing chest work, adding muscle and increasing bone density, at this the end of your growing years, might have a little bit of an effect towards increasing your frame size.
As it makes sense that a growing bone, even slow growing, will be stimulated to grow a little larger, by putting more mass on it, and giving it more demanding jobs that it would increase to meet the demands
But regardless it isn't going to be anything really significant.
In my case I come from a background where both sides of my family are big chested. Heck my grandfather, who worked building a railroad, then built houses, and retired as a house painter, died at 6'6" 285 pounds, and damn near had a six pack!
Stupid ectomorphic genes just had to slip into my mix from my grandmother through my Dad to me!
But all the above is just my layman's oppinion/observation.

Why would the rib cage expand by doing pullovers????
Isn't your rib cage bone?
How can you make bone grow by lifting...
your ribs are attached to your sternum by cartilaginous tissue. it was believed by many old-time bodybuilders (particularly Arnold) that pullovers stretched this cartilage, and could therefore expand the overall size of the rib cage.
as far as whether it's true or not, i don't really have an opinion. :/
I think Frank Zane said he did pull overs too. He has a chest article somewhere on this site
Exercises make muscles grow. Last I checked, rib cages weren't muscle.
A resounding NO for all the above reasons. If it appears the bodybuilders of old appear to have "wide ribcage frames" it's probably because they also had narrow waists unlike the bloated, distended stomachs of today's bodybuilders. Pullovers (DB, machine or cable) are a great exercise IMO and have their place in a BACK routine versus chest as they primarily work the lats as well as the serratus. Unfortunately because of this old piece of mis-information they are often overlooked as an exercise choice.

Arnold says so and so does Bill Pearl. Two outstanding bodybuilders. Thats enough proof for now. :)

and if ARnold says that by doing static hangs you can change your lat insertion, are you going ot believe him.
LOL!
by your above statement you just shot down any remote credability your statement may have had
Many great champion bodybuilders know this. Lee Labrada "another great Champion" believes in expanding the ribcage.
Doctors use pullovers to successfully treat mild cases of Pectus Excavatum (sunken chest). http://www.planetmuscle.com/articles/6_2/labrada.html
Expanding the rib cage means growing bone. Growing bone means it's possible to become as tall as you want. That's impossible once puberty stops, so your argument makes no sense.

We are not talking about growing bone? There is no argument ?

That's BS. Surgery is the only way to correct it.

Fact is the rib cage can expand. Ask any pregnant woman. Or any doctor. Enuff said end of story.
