Bench Shirt
this has probably been answered before but i couldnt find it. if i workout with a bench shirt for a while and then stop using it, will my all natural bench get higher? i do sets of 185x10 195x7 205x5 225x4. i just want to get my numbers up. how long should i workout with the bench shirt before i notice a gain in my natural bench? (silly question to ask but ill still ask). thanks. goals: bench 285lbs. possibly max 300.

You should notice a change in about 12 weeks. However, the problem with training in the shirt is that your strength off your chest may decrease while your tri's should get a lot stronger and therefore your max might go up but the risk of injury also increases when the shirt is taking away. I found that my best raw gains came when i started using boards and training with different grip spacings.

My Raw bench hasnt gone up after using my shirt for a couple months, but my shirt bench has went way up. I would say the best thing to do would be, one day use the shirt and one day bench raw. Maybe use a wide grip with the shirt and narrower without. It might be better just to lift raw if thats what you want. I could care less about my raw bench anymore and my shoulders arnt killing me all the time like before.

I would say if you are mainly concerned with your natural bench going up then focus on a program that will increase your natural bench instead of using a shirt. Dont get me wrong, I am all for shirt work and use mine alot, but I am going for only shirted maxes. I would change you bench routine away from a bodybuilding style (ie..185x10, 195x7, 205x5, 225x4) to more of a powerlifting routine. Here is a link to a great one to increase your raw bench (AJ Roberts can attest to this, he put some impressive numbers on his bench with it).

Or I have heard of others, ex:
Work up to 95% of 1rm and do 10 singles. Once you can get all 10 move up 10lb. Then move onto Heavy tricep work, some lats and delts.
