Yes, you should be safe for at least 12 hours.

Yes, you should be safe for at least 12 hours.
Interesting. I've never heard this before. Why would it lose it's effectiveness? Water doesn't react adversely, and the powder itself (according to the container of mine/Optimum-a respected quality brand) is good for at least 2 years, although mine certainly wouldn't be around for that long. What is the basis for your "time limit"?
Straight Whey powder probably 3-4 hours at best.Meal Replacement prob. 2 hours at best because of the vitamins in the meal replacement.

Dave L.
I'll ask you the same question. Where do you get this info from? And 2 hours for a meal replacement because of the vitamins? What does this have to do with it? If you have some facts, please post them. If this is an opinion, label it as such, but at least give your reasons for it.
rob, why you gots to mix up a drink hours before you actually chug it? The only time i would use protein powder before i take it in is when i make a self-made protein bar....i put that sucka in the freezer so that probably aint helping me out.
How can water change the molecular structure of the protein? I think that they whey will be intact mixed with water for much longer than 12 hours, provided that it is kept refrigerated. I think that the protein would remain intact till the drink starts to get moldy or go bad.
I just take a gallon of water and a container full of protein and mix it when I get ready for it. To much hassel to make in advance.

let's say I mix it in the morning and drink it at school during my break..........

Thats fine.
I've never had to deal with this problem cause my gym is close to where I live. But I imagine that 50g whey and 50g+ dextrose would be very hard to mix with just a shaker. Does anyone here have to use a shaker to mix their postworkout shake.
I mix my shakes the night before in a blender and keep them in the refrigerator. I take them to work with me, and keep them in the refrigerator there. That aside (I don't think they would taste very good warm), as long as they aren't mixed with milk (which of course would go bad), I don't believe that the protein and vitamin content will diminish after 12 hours as someone suggested. As I said, I mix mine the night before for convenience. It is a lot easier than carrying a tub of protein and a gallon of water, and a shaker around with you. This is my opinion, and it is a somewhat educated opinion I might add. :D (I've been doing this for a long time now) ;)
In reading the posts, I think I may have misunderstood what Antonio said. He said "at least 12 hours". (although, again, I think it would be fine for much longer, but seriously, how long ahead would anyone mix their shakes? Certainly, even over the course of a weekend, as long as they were refrigerated, there shouldn't be a problem) :D
in biochem lab when we deal with peptides (proteins) we only use distilled water b/c theoretically the ions in tap water could denature the protein however, if your talking about consuming 30g of whey protein...it's not going to affect to any large extent within a few days time.
Peace
Makes sense. How about RTDs? They sit there all mixed up for weeks or months. I don't buy the things, I'm just curious.

That's what I do too. I mix my shakes the night before I go to work. At work I don't have time to mix them since I'm a traveling teacher and go from school to school and I barely have time to eat. I have all my food ready and make sure I eat every 2 hours though.
The reason why I said at least 12 hours is because I asked the same question to big cat a while ago since, as I said, I have to mix my shakes the night before. His answer was that the protein should be safe for at least 12 hours. I don't have any proof but that's why Big cat told me and I guess I beleive him.
man that **** smells funny after a while leaving it in water cus when i wash out my shaker in the morning sometimes its RANK!
