Just do both. I'd do heavy squats/light deadlifts one week then switch the next week, this is what I do and I play a lot of basketball and hockey. For sports they both have their pros but I say they are just about equal overall.
Direct load vs indirect load. The squat and RDL are superior to the conventional deadlift if you are referring to athletics specifically though.
