Hi, I've been taking l-lysine for about a month now, in order to estimulate the HGH release, however I've read that if you take Lysine along with arginine it works better...should I start taking them together right now, just before going to bed? or should I take L-arginine as soon as i wake up and lysine before going to bed? or... should I wait a couple of days before start taking them together?
What do you suggest?
I'm sure i read somewhere that in the 'L' form they actually compete for the same receptors. So basically you may not be any better off taking both together. I will see if i can find where i read it.

Growth factors and muscle function
L-arginine supplements have been popular for years as promoters of growth hormone production in the human body. Clinical trials to test this idea produced little more than confusion until it was realized that very large doses (around 40 grams per day) are required when arginine is used by itself.16
Dual amino-acid supplementation with L-arginine and L-lysine, on the other hand, increases growth hormone levels without the need for large doses of either supplement. Studies using 1200-1500 mg of each supplement showed that significant increases in growth hormone levels take place in the blood from 30 to 90 minutes after consumption.12,13 It appears that the best time to take arginine+lysine is when one is resting ? not when one is about to exercise. Exercise itself causes growth hormone levels to rise, and this effect nullifies the advantage gained from the supplements.13
Muscle function in the elderly typically declines, regardless of the amount of exercise performed. Among the important causes of this decline are deficiencies in the growth factor ?IGF-1? (insulin-like growth factor) and the amino acid ?cysteine?. Supplemention with arginine and N-acetylcysteine (NAC) can correct these deficiencies. A clinical trial in 2003 showed that the muscular response to physical exercise in frail geriatric patients was ?strongly enhanced? by arginine+NAC supplementation.14
IGF-1 is a key promoter of muscle growth in people of all ages ? in fact, the growth effects of growth hormone and of anabolic steroids like testosterone may result from the induction of IGF-1 production in the body rather than any direct effects on the muscles by these hormones themselves. It is therefore of interest that the production of IGF-1 is promoted directly by arginine at doses somewhat smaller than that required to raise growth hormone concentrations. One study showed that 17 grams/day of arginine caused significant elevation of IGF-1 levels.8

Just a little FYI all 20 amino acids used to make the 2000+ proteins start with L- Their are over 120 amino acids (60 technically) as the come in L- and R- pairs..For example L-valine and R-valine or L-arginine and R-arginine etc..Only the L- version is used as this makes all the proteins spiral to the left..It is the same for the 4 building blocks of DNA always the left handed version..
I am not 100% sure if they neutralize or compete in the body (so does L-lysine affect L-arginine and its production of NO?)..One thing that is know is that excessive amounts of L-arginine can cause an out break of herpes in those that have HSV-1 and HSV-2 as L-arginine is needed/used by the herpes virus to replicate..On the other hand 3g (3,000 mg) of L-lysine a day can help prevent/shorten herpes out breaks as the L-lysine blocks the herpes viruses ability to utilize L-arginine..
Finally L-arginine can help erectile function because it produces NO (nitric oxide)..The nitric oxide is released by the nerve synapses and signals the smooth muscle cells in the penis to produce c-GMP (cyclic-Guanosine MonoPhosphate)..c-GMP causes the smooth muscles to relax allowing more blood to flow in and less out (until climax)..After climax another substance builds up and destroys c-GMP called phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE 5 which is an enzyme -ase- ending)..So far all the erectile dysfunction drugs work by blocking this enzyme and are known as PDE-5 inhibitors (such as Viagra, Cialis and Levitra)
