a lifting strap is juat a 1-2" piece of fabric 1-2 feet long with or without a loop in one end.
Made these out of a battery box strap two years ago. Been using them ever since without any problem.
I just cut the strap in two and sewed a loop in the end of each one. I routinely use them for shrugs with excess of 350lbs.
When I first posted these last year, I had a guy tell me they would cut into my wrists/hands with the heavy stuff, but until I get to the really heavy stuff, they will work just fine.

This.
I ordered some protein and some other stuff and got mine. I don't use 'em, but I got em if I end up needing them and they seem fairly comfortable.

Pretty cool looking "Jay Cutler"! Must have a lot of free time!
Homemade's the way to go, I find cotton better than nylon, although it won't last as long...
I have a pair of straps I made from seatbelts. Rippetoe had this in the book as an idea but I had already made them. I think that they really dig in your hands though with heavy weight. Most nylon straps will. I also have two pairs from APT and one of them is nylon and the other is thick cotton. I like the cotton alot better since they don't cut off my circulation.

You're seriously too poor to afford a $5 pair of lifting straps? Then get off the damned internet and go find a job!
I bought some on ebay for £2 including delivery. I'm sure you can afford some.

animal is a nice guy, but you're asking him about something he offered someone over a YEAR ago.
Seriously straps are cheap as hell, you can get a pair for less than what it costs to eat a value meal.
Okay maybe not THAT cheap but less than 10 bucks.
Rippetoe describes his lifting straps and their use in this video.

You dont even need the loop at one end.
Go to walmart and go to the fabric department. You will find cotton strapping, sort of like the stuff web belts are made out of.
Get about 4 feet of it.
Now, take a 2 foot piece and fold it in half. where the loop part is where your wrist goes. The long strap parts go forwrad through your palms.
Wrap around bar and pull away.
Costs about $4 tops.
^^^^I think this is even more comfortable than using the loop, seems to balance the pull on my wrists better.better.
Do you want homemade lifting straps when you're deadlifting your max above your kneecaps?
Those seatbelts seem like a good idea though, but they'd dig in, you'd need padding.
probably cost more to make them. Mine only cost me $9.99

The seatbelts would work great.
If you don't have loops swen into them you don't have to worry about anything. I worry more about the loops ripping loose, even with commercial ones, than the straps themselves breaking.
It seems more work to try and build them yourself. I picked up a set for $12 bucks.
