I read that doing squats as a teenager could stunt your growth as they compress your spine slightly.
Is this a serious risk?

yes, they compress your spine. no, they could not suppress linear growth unless you damage an ephysial growth plate
And there's no point in hanging on a bar or any of that other weird sh*t to decompress the spine?
When you sleep your spine automatically decompresses. THat's why your taller in the morning.
Squats won't damage your growth plates(or stun our growth) as long as you use proper form.
the last two posts said it all. Dont be afraid by rumours from skinny tall people who are jellous cos they have no muscle whatsoever. most of them i could snap in half over my knee.
if you are meant to be 5'0 or 5'8 or 6 foot tall that is the height you will be it genetics
NO
You cannot damage your epiphelial paltes by performing any exercise... the close up due to genetics... If anything squats will make you grow because of all the hormones released while you are performing them (Testosterone, Growth Hromone, etc...), in that case it would help you get taller...

Pavel Tsatsuoline recommends it - good enough for me!
I usually hang from a bar after deadlifts and squats - the least it can do is improve my grip!
