I have heard that people trying to lose weight should stay away from foods like bread and oats. Is this true? What are some foods I should avoid while cutting?

They mean carbs, generally its a good idea to cut down on them as you're cutting but i personally dont bother, too many calories to give up.
no you dont have to stay away from shit. eat 500 cals below maintanence and lift
As you're probably unaware, the names of the foods nor the frequency and timing of meals does not determine the outcome of your diet, rather it's the energy balance that determines weight and macro that play a part in body composition.

Generally if you want to lose weight avoid these and you will:
All desserts (cake, candy, chocolate, pie, cookies, ice cream, chips)
Alcohol
Fatty meats + Skin
Anything deep fried
All fast food
Any drink except for water, coffee, and tea
If you do this you SHOULD see weight loss. Really if you look at something you could tell if it's healthy or not.
