My vote goes to deadlift.
I'd say deadlifts work more overall full body strength.
Deadlfts till I'm dead.
Nothing makes you feel more like a Man when you're the only person in your Gym, Deadlifting reps after reps in your little corner and everyone's watching like wtf is this guy on?
DEADLIFT FOR STRENGTH PRESIDENT!
deadlifts
sure,deadlifts
both

This is definitely true! I rarely ever see anybody do deadlifts at my gym, and if they do they never do more than two plates. I second that vote!
Both exercises have there perks for each individual. The best part about squats is you can do a lot of different variations in order to target certain areas. Both will work out the entire body and get the muscles pumping. Deadlifts are a very power lift that will also work well with grip strength. Both of these exercises should be placed in any persons training program to help gain the progress they are looking for.

I would say both are best. Do both for optimal results.
both done together! but seriously it all depends on the person
I prefer squats.
My vote goes to squat, but do both
i dont think most of you realize which section of the forum this is in, seeing that this is in the sports performance thread, its squats plain and simple. If this were in the powerlifting section it would be deadlifts. For athletic performance squats are king, someone on the misc pointed out before squats are the performance builder and deadlifts are the performance stabilizer, to run faster you have to squat explosively, when you stall deadlifts help overcome posterior imbalances to allow the front to continue to become more explosive. but for overall strength only, deadlifts yes. Or hell both either way!

I do squats on leg day and deadlifts on Back day. Best of both worlds

whoa there brah thats a whole other debate for a different thread haha
To increase athletic performance it's squats hands down (IMO), but for overall strength I would incorperate squats, deadlifts, bench press, and military press
Squat cleans, squats, front squats, snatches, press, jerks, occasional deadlifts and youll get stronger ans faster than you would ever get doing some useless bb workout
i do both but i prefer doing SQUATS all day everyday

This is a good point, definitely incorporate both into a sports orientated training routine. I have noticed thogh that the strongest powerlifters have a much heavier squat than they do deadlift. What does this say about the deadlift being supiour for overall strength.
Deadlifts involve more of your full body, so deads are my vote. Squats are an awesome lower body exercise though.

Sorry. Forgot where i was at for a min.
I'd go for squats from a purely strength for sports standpoint. The reason being that squats allow for a much greater ROM for the leg muscles whereby they are developed far more than in the deadlift and leg strength (as opposed to less leg and perhaps more lower back strength from the deadlift) is probably more important in most sports. Plus having a big squat also requires one to have a strong back since otherwise you won't be squatting that weight at all.
Conclusion: I think a nice full squat is a bit more useful for athletic strength and conditioning than a deadlift. However this is only when comparing one to the other: the deadlift is still a very good and important exercise.
I train at a gym where we get a lot of national and international level track and field athletes, including Olympic level shot putters and discus throwers and they do a lot of squatting but I don't think I've ever seen them do a traditional deadlift.
squats will improve your deadlift more than deadlifts will improve you squat. so i choose squat.

go to powerlifting section and tell them ur squat is more then ur deadlift and see what they have to say about that.

I didn't realize that I grouped myself with some of the strongest power lifters.... My deadlift is much more than my squat.
Both are great, I do them on separate days to keep progression going, but I personally feel that the Squat would be better for gaining overall strength because if you were to pick only one of the two exercises and do it for 3 months straight, your deadlift would be much higher after increasing your squat than your squat would be after increasing your deads (if that makes sense). I find that the squat has better crossover to the dead while this relationship is not exactly vice versa

^As do I. If you want to be strong you got to do both.
Deadlifts. If I had to choose one, no doubt at all. Especially if you squat back nice before you lift... you still use your quads quite a bit. There are also variations like snatch grip, wide grip, platform deadlifts that would hit your quads even more. Deads along with cardio are all ive been doing for legs lately.
