Only thing comes to mind; a reverse shrug. But technically isn't a bent over barbell row the bar is 'behind' the back?
Behind the back upright row sounds like you'd be holding the bar parallel to the floor and thrusting out and in; seems it'd give the forearms a  workout.
I'm stumped.

Its supposed to be an exercise for the middle back...I am stumped, too. I guess I'll just replace this one with another that works the same area.
There is no such thing, no way can you do a true upright row behind your back. Even if it is another form of an exercise like behind the back shrugs (or a half ass upright row behind the back as far as the human body will allow you to lift a bar) and someone names it behind the back upright rows they will be naming the exercise totally wrong.
Never heard of it but my guess would be lay on an incline bench with dumbells and lift them as high as you could....???? Doesn't seem like it would hit the mid back though. Probably not the correct name.

No idea, and I thought I had heard of nearly every odd lift there was.
Truly, as BH said, there is no way to row with the barbell in that manner, unless you are some sort of circus freak.

Yeah, I am starting to think this is named incorrectly. Googled it and came up empty. I am thinking it may be a reverse grip bent over row....
Thanks for the feedback, guys.
Is this the gym version of a left-handed monkey wrench?

i think its for working the traps tho

ROM is crap, though. If someone wants to work the traps in that manner, they should probably stick with behind the back shrugs.

Looks like a nice way to get a shoulder injury. My deltoids started crying looking at that picture.

X2! I'll never try this!
like bodyhard said i cant imagine how to even get the bar positioned to lift behind you much less lifting it up.its hurting my elbows just thinking about it.
On a side note....
Damn, Lee Haney's got a big ass head. :D
I was speaking to someone at my gym the other day about this very exercise. Although he didn't call it a reverse upright row, he said it works the traps and in between the shoulder blades.
I agree though, not a natural movement and seems very awkward. Definitely a contestant for shoulder injury.

Those are behind the back shrugs.
In order for upright rows to be affective, the elbows have to go higher than, or at least parallel to, the shoulders, something that is physically IMPOSSIBLE to do with your arms behind your back!
Actually, I have read that Lee Haney was a big advocate of behind the back rows. That picture looks like he is trying to row behind his back and not just shrug. The elbows are going higher in the picture and not his deltoids. ROM isn't going to be as good as front rows obviously.
I stand by my original feeling that my shoulders would fall off if I did these.
Thanks for the replies, everyone. I just swapped out for seated cable rows instead. I have tried behind the back shrugs - very awkward and rom is horrible.

What Haney is doing is what he refers to as a "behind the back upright row". It's a hybrid between a shrug and an upright row since the elbows bend as in the latter, but obviously they can't go high at all. He uses it as an alternative to behind the back shrugging.
I remember I read about them and tried them when I was at Gold's Venice, where if you're walking around, you'll see all kinds of weird variations of exercises. Maybe seeing all that inspired me. Anyway...
I tried em on a power rack and my butt kept getting in the way. Tried a Smith, and though it did clear my butt, I had to lean back so far, it felt too precarious. Not an exercise I'd probably use since there are better/safer variations, especially for those with rotator issues.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Some people might be able to get away with this but no thanks.
It looks like a movement that is totally contrary to the way human beings are designed to move. Don't do it.

I've Been doing them the way Lee Haney does them for a while. Doesn't feel uncomfortable at all. It's a good lift for traps and rear delts.
no idea..
