How many calories does a typical man burn a day?

How many calories does a typical man (lets say hes average-sized> 13st & 6ft tall) burn in an average day- without going to the gym? please breakdown things like casual walks, going to work and even sleeping at night time. if the recommended calorie amount is 2000-2500 for men per day then i'm guessing thats roughly what a man typically (on average) burns up over the course of the day. whats the answer??

C) how many calories does a typical man burn up if (lets say) he goes to the gym for 1 hour a day?

There is no such thing as a typical man.
Factors such as age, activity, weight, etc all mean that it's not possible to put a figure to how many calories are needed.

For the example you've given, there are plenty of online calculators which will give you a ballpark figure.

Resting metabolic rate (RMR) = 66 + (6.23 x weight in lbs) + (12.7 x height in inches) + (6.8 x age in years)

So for me, at 25, at 154.25 lb and 69 inches: 66 + (6.23 x 154.25) + (12.7 x 69) + (6.8 x 25) = 2073.28 calories

For you (or the 'average-sized' guy), at 26, 182 lb and 72 inches: 66 + (6.23 x 182) + (12.7 x 72) + (6.8 x 26) = 2284.26 calories

That's resting, so assuming you pretty much lay about all day that's how much you should be burning...I'd say in a normal day you should burn 200-300 calories on top of that, maybe more, and if you go to the gym for an hour, it depends what you do - weights won't burn as much but should raise your RMR for longer afterwards, whereas if you did an hour of cardio, you could expect to burn 600-700 calories (expect to lose muscle mass if you do this though!)

Obviously though, every body is different so that's just a rough estimate, but it's what I've used when working out how many calories I should consume for a deficit, and losing 20lb in 6 weeks has been OK for me!

average height and weight i can give you a good guess.

A: 2500
B:1900
C: 2700-3000

My stats being 5'9" 178lbs according to my BodyBugg device....

A: About 2500 if I dont do any exercise. Just my daily routine.
B: I burn between 1.2 and 1.4 cal per minute while laying in bed/sitting at work.
C: On days I workout, I burn between 2900-3200 cals for the day. That's usually between 40 and 80 minutes of working out.

Everyone will be different based on their own metabolic rate, BF%, height, weight, genetics etc.

The only gripe i have with your mathematical equation is that the last part implies your metabolism gets better with age. surely thats not right??? i mean i would like to think i at 26 have a better metabolism than an 100 year old man.


okay heres a new one. yesterday i did a 5 mile ru, 20 sit-ups and 80 press-ups. and asides from that had a lazy day in just watching TV by and large. how much did i burn yesterday?? i'm guessing around 3000 calories according to your calculations

I plugged my stats into your formula and came up with an RMR of 2304.42. I have been cutting for 5 weeks now on 1600-1800 calories per weekday and 2200-2500 on the weekends. I also lift 5 days a week and do cardio 4 days a week, jogging 3-4 miles each time. My weight loss has been very slow, like 1 pound every 2 weeks. Is it possible that I am not eating enough?

yeah it sounded fishy to me straight away. i looked at a RMR calculator online. i put my measurements in and then started with my age (26) which says i should burn around 1900+ calories a day naturally.

i then kept going up 1 year and it seems to drop 6/7 calories every year you age. so theres your answer!!

its not that bad though because a man in his mid-60s of my dimensions still burns up around 1650 calories per day. i personally thought it would have been worse than that.

Just came back to this, you're right it should be subtracting the age part...my bad guys, don't know where my head was that day! Austinography...it depends a lot on what you're eating as opposed to how much - a calorie deficit will result in weight loss, but you need to consume more protein and less carbs/fats.

It's not really possible to work out exactly how many calories you burn in a day with exercise, it's all an estimate, but once you know your (rough) RMR you can use what is called the Harris Benedict Equation to work out your daily calorie consumption, which is basically:

If you get little or no exercise, it'll be your RMR x 1.2
If you perform light exercise 1 - 3 days per week, it's RMR x 1.375
If you perform moderate exercise 3 - 5 days per week, it's RMR x 1.55
If you perform hard exercise 6 - 7 days per week, RMR x 1.725
If you perform very hard exercise & have a physical job or 2 x training per day, RMR x 1.9

So let's go back to your RMR, which using the corrected formula works out as 1937.46. I'm going to assume you're performing moderate exercise 3 -5 days per week, so 1937.46 x 1.55 = 3003.06, which to be fair seems like quite a lot! Keep consuming around 1800-2000 calories a day and you should see a weight loss of around 2lb per week...obviously if you don't exercise that much then adjust, and again it's all ballpark figures, every body is individual so don't treat these formulae like they're gospel!

between going to the gym/running outdoors/playing football (soccer) i excercise a good 6-8 times a week i'd say. so i must be pretty high.

also i randomly read something interesting but it did make sense. it says that maybe 1 or 2 days a week you should actually aim to be OVER your calorie burn because if you are constantly below it everyday sooner or later your metabolism will start to become more idle (for what of a better word). i guess this makes sense because your bodily organisms need a challenge to keep working efficiently- or so i'd imagine.

i guess its sorta like how your body needs germs to build up a better immune system in the long run- if you see the analogy??

I think what you mean is that when you're consistently consuming less calories than you're burning, it becomes harder to lose fat - I don't really know much of the science behind it, but very basically your body starts to think that it's starving and tries to preserve your fat stores, so a day of eating more calories than you consume per week could 'trick' your body into allowing the fat stores to be used up.

Yeah your MR will be quite high then if you're doing 6-8 times a week, go for 1.725...I'm not sure about this equation though as that seems high to me, currently trying to gain weight and I have to consume 3,500 calories a day which I'm finding is pretty difficult!

if its protein/carbs then yes i can see why you'd find it hard but if we're throwing in chocolate/sweet stuff i reckon i'd find it easy. something like a cake (which u cud eat in like 10 minutes) is like 1500/1600 calories.

but i'm guessing your pretty much trying to hit 3500 calories in a relatively healthy manner and by consumin high-protein foods i.e tuna, fish, meat etc,,,
