for a male?
Whatever they wanted, depends on the look you're going for.
Me personally, I like lean, so whatever weight it takes for me to get lean is optimal, whatever that may be.

would 160 be a good weight for lean?
If u can get lean at that weight then 160, if not 150, then 140, 130, 120, etc.
147 today and still cutting. Don't worry about weight.
I'm 5'8, 185 at about 14-15% B/f.... I'll be good around 175ish.
would 260 at 5`8 be considered obese? Because thats what I am at currently ... lol
Dunno but I was 230lbs a couple years ago. Just start working bro.

There really is no ideal weight that would apply to everyone of a particular height. The BMI scale certainly doesn't often work for people with larger frames or those who lift weights. So it's gonna depend on how lean you want to be, your frame, and how much muscle you have or plan/want to have.
I'm 5'7" ~155lbs (about the scale-equivalent of 5'8" 160lbs) and have the bone structure of an adolescent Miley Cyrus. I'd love to someday be 160-165 lbs AND lean. According to the BMI scale, which attempts to classify "ideal weight" ranges, though, I would be overweight at that point. Which is kinda odd, given the fact that lots of people consider me scrawny currently, only 5lbs away from overweight status.
So basically, you got to dial in what is "ideal" for yourself. You'll have a better idea the closer you get to that point.
Depends on your bone density. I'd say someone with the average bone structure at 5'8 should be around 145-155. Someone that wants to be muscular lean should probably weight 155-165.
Lean is also a relative term. It really depends what you mean by the word. If you mean skinny but not anorexic skinny I'd say 145 is the leanest. I was 5'8 150 in hs and I'd say I was pretty lean w/ 12% body fat but little muscle. I did have average to above average bone structure and the areas that makes someone look bigger like your calfs, quads, shoulders, etc. were more pronounced so I appeared bigger than what my weight dictated.
