Which do think is the best exercise for back width and why?
Deadlift
Deadlift
Isnt that more for thickness?
Medium grip pullups, then medium grip pulldowns
I DON'T agree that deadlifts are the best for width. I believe either wide grip pull ups or wide grip lat pull downs.
gotta go with Wide overhand grip pull ups (but not too wide!).

Wide grip chin, no doubt.
It works the upper fibers of the lats and teres, but more importantly, it pulls the shoulder blades out which REALLY contributes to back width.
You can have big thick lats and a crappy lat spread, conversely, you can have flexible shoulder blades with a great lat spread and crappy lats.
pullups/chinups + learning how to do lat spreads
Wide grip pullups is what built my wings, rows got them thicker and chins got the lower parts visible.
Wide Grip Pullups.
Oops
Wide grip pullups/chins.
Widegrip chins, I was also the retard that clicked the closegrip I meant to say wide :)
Weighted Pullups wide: 4 sets to failure.
Bent over BB row: 4 sets 8-10 reps.
Rack Dead Lifts: 4 set 8-10 reps
rack chins hit the lats like nothing else... just wider then shoulder grip, and weighted...
wide grip pull ups limit your range of motion and are not as effective.. they will work.. just not as good as the slightly wider then shoulder grip...
Wide grip chins and behind the back chins have built width in my back like nobody's business. And I can use much more weight than I ever could with pullups.
Rack chins and hammer grip pull ups.
