That isn't a call you are going to get 4th down in the 4th quarter of any game - let alone the Super Bowl. Be a better team, call a better play, run a better route....act like a national champion. Not to mention, it was a good ways out of bounds, and there no promise that had he not been 'held' that he would have even made the grab and stayed in anyway.
When the defender grabs your receiver's jersey with both hands and holds him as the ball is in the air the play you call and the route you run doesn't mean jack sh.it. That's kind of why it's against the rules.
That ball was beyond catchable. It was barely more than a foot beyond his hands, even after being held.
I don't subscribe to the theory that the rules go out the window because it's a critically important play.
You don't call ticky tack stuff then...but when it's blatant and determines the outcome...yeah...you kinda should

Like the umpire that ruined the perfect game in the MLB some time back.

It was holding.
Holding should be called.
I don't think it needs to be any more complicated than that.

Stop making excuses for poor officiating.

Apparently the rules don't need to be followed on the plays that matter most.
That's why Green Bay deserved to lose at Seattle. It was the play of the game and the rules go out the window on those plays.

I don't know, you are saying the rules ceased to apply for one play.
You already said it was interference. Guess what, if you don't want to get flagged for interference...don't interfere. If you do, even IF the ball was uncatchable (PS: the uncatchable claim is how I know, more than anything else, that you are trolling), you deserve the flag for being too God damn stupid to realize that you should have let the receiver go

Vid of play? I was buying TP at the time.

Farles being catchable is one of the relevant parts of the rule....it was beyond catchable
Farles being catchable is one of the relevant parts of the rule....it was beyond catchable
You don't even know the rules.
Defensive holding, which was what Jim and everyone else with two working eyes attached to a functional brain have said occurred, does not require a "catchable" pass after 5 yards. This holding occurred at 7 yards, easily beyond 5.
"Yes, there's no question in my mind there was pass interference and then a hold on Crabtree on the last one," Jim Harbaugh said in reference to the second down play during that same series.
Edit: so the head coach thinks he got double-pumped in the ass by the officials on the last drive of the game, the most important drive of the season. Sounds fair.

Correct.
It helps to actually know the rules.
Also, it was so catchable I can't believe manly is still going that route with is troll. I'll bet the receiver could have overrun the ball if he wasn't held, even. And I"ll be the defender could hvae been in position to make a play on the ball, if his hands weren't occupied grabbing jersey, lol.
I'm done posting in a troll argument about it. Neither one is my team and it's all said and done and in the record books now.
On to something less unproductive.

you have to be retarded, seriously, if you don't think that PI is based on whether the pass is catchable. the CB could be doing your WR in the angus and if the pass wasn't catchable there is not PI. for the lamb of god.

Someone should ask this defender why he thought it was a good idea to grab the receiver's shirt. I personally don't like my shirt being tugged on.

Notice how the Bud Light commercial with Stevie Wonder (with background music playing "Superstition") was played several times after that incident.
Very superstitious lighting on the wall.
It was holding.
Holding should be called.
I don't think it needs to be any more complicated than that.
Agreed on application, but since the receiver was pushing on the defender's helmet, I can see where an official would let it slide.
Severity is a matter of degrees and not always black and white, as much as the fans on the losing end of the stick want to make it.
Another observation: Ironic that a team known for going on mid to long range passes on the first down, or other atypical times, would opt to get a safety call, but it was really the smartest thing they could do, considering the situation.
And the way the dude played it, barely moving and then jogging to the side as slowly as possible without getting caught (thereby eating up precious seconds) was brilliant.
-
Taking the safety was the only intelligent call at that point. Anything else would just be stupid. And that is exactly how you should play it ( wasting time in the end zone)
In a college game, or an NFL game where you are less than 100% confident in your long snapper's ability + your punter's hands and steadfastness, I would say snap the ball out the back of the end zone for the immediate safety, especially up by 4+ points. But in the NFL the long snapper + punter ought to be able to pull it off like they did.
