The biggest differences I see are the inside of the inside collars (the known York is more rounded) and the slight difference between the distance between the collars and the rings.

The bars are lined up on the left end, so the deviation you see on the right side is due to differences in length and ring spacing.
if it's paint, is it thick? Like could it be covering the York stamp?
I'll check, but I don't think it is thick enough to cover any writing.

The bar I have came with some DP international plates, so that leads me to strongly believe the black split sleeve bar is DP. The bars were most likely built in Alabama before the founder left to become governor of the state. The info I've found on the company seems pretty interesting, but I can't find anything specifically saying these bars are theirs.

here is mine as well, no writing on hub, looks the same as yours

Unlike the black oxide that I am familiar with (which will scratch), this coating will flake or chip if enough pressure is applied. However, it adheres to the bar pretty well (almost like it was baked or bonded to the bar). It is a very thin even coating and looks like it was applied professionally. It in no way impairs the knurl. The coating is not thick enough to cover up any writing. Speaking of the knurl, it looks very similar to the York bar.
Known York:
Length - 86 5/8
Inside Collars 52 5/8
Rings 39 1/2
Bar in Question
Length - 86 1/2
Inside Collars - 52 3/8
Rings 38 1/2

Yeah, they look almost identical.
The only history I have on mine is that the seller purchased it from a PIAS.

The guy I got it from is an avid york collector (i'm talking full set of globes, 5 sets of deep dish plates, all sorts of bars, benches, leg press - all york) who indicated it was a york bar. He said he cleaned out the sleeves and rehabed it.
-
They all look the same, so it must be a DP bar. Does anyone know when these DP bars were made?
I seem to remember someone posting a page from an old JC Penney catalog where a DP set was being sold. Now if I can just remember where I saw that posting.

Well, I guess that is a good argument for it being a York. Very interesting. Either way, it seems like a pretty good bar. I'm happy with my purchase either way.

I had been looking for it after Atty mentioned it. But I had been looking in Sears catalogs...I'm not sure why. I was able to find it quickly after you said it was in JCPenny.

Does it have a center knurl? It looks very similar to my 1973 oly bar, and it is also not stamped.

York made bars with and without a center knurl. Atty posted some catalog pages a few pages back. They're definitely worth a look -- a rare treat!

1980 JCPenny catalog.
I think this is the bar!!
$329 for the set in 1980! It wasn't even cheap when it was new!

I agree. Mine is almost identical, but not as clean. In the process of refurbing the entire set.

Thank you, guys. The photos were actually taken before I took the sleeves off and thoroughly cleaned them with CLR. I like this bar a lot. I mainly use this one and my Ivanko OB-20kg.

That bench cracks me up! Snap city, as they say. Is there some online archive of dept. store catalogues, or do you actually have the original Penny's catalogue??

So is not a York? Biscuits
So is not a York? Biscuits
Probably not.

So, I'm going to assume it is a DP. I can't tell much difference in the quality of the York and the DP, but I'm curious about pricing.
If it had been a York a fair price would have been what?
Since it is a DP, a fair price would have been what?

anyone have any thoughts on mine? Is it worth my effort cleaning up?

Yorks go for $75 to $150 for the basic bar.
