Got the Cowabunga Collection for Christmas. Just finished TMNT (NES version) yesterday. Had to use the 'rewind' feature several times though. That feature along with the 'save state' feature are very much appreciated with this type of game.
A little late to the game here since I just got a Switch a few months ago (see post from October above). So far my games played have been:
- Link's Awakening: Only major Zelda game I hadn't played yet. Thought it was solid, but nothing special. For $60 I think they should have added something else. If they wanted to keep it like the original with nothing new except the graphics, then make it a freaking $19.99 game. I assume the bulk of the hard work for Zelda is creating the actual world and dungeons and story, for which they had to do nothing for this one. Would rather play Minish Cap or Link Between Worlds. 7/10
- Mario Odysee: I may be alone here but I'm pretty disappointed with this. I absolutely love Mario games, but I just didn't like this that much. I'm not into open world Mario, Mario 64 is one of my least favorite games. I just got bored wanderng around trying to find more and more moons. I got about 300 moons and quit. My two favorite Marios are Galaxy 2 and 3D World... I love tight and creative platforming level design that those games have, not the wandering around big open areas. 6/10
- Celeste: fuking amazing game, definitely in my top 5 platforming games of all time, maybe close to the top (along with Galaxy 2, 3D World, and Rayman Legends). Interesting story, but the gameplay is just top notch, incredibly challenging but doable at the same time. 10/10
- Hollow Knight: currently about 20 or so hours in, still playing every night. Almost gave up an hour in as the begining is painfully slow and confusing, but once it gets going you just can't put it down. Every day I'm itching to start it back up and keep exploring the amazing world and playing the really satisfying combat. So far 9/10
Just trying to fill the time until Tears of the Kingdom comes out.
Being that Link's Awakening is a first-party release, Nintendo would never sell it at $19.99. I get what you're saying though. Personally, it was worth $50 for me. Being that there was such a long time since the original GB release of the game, it's not like it was a 'copy paste' type of situation with Link's Awakening.
Hollow Knight has been on my list to complete for a long time now. The difficulty of it has kept me at bay. I want to spend some time on it and finish it though.

agreed, don't even see why the asking price isn't fair since they did competely remake the entire game, albeit that the structure was already existing
it's not comparable with these "next-gen updates" that only boost the framerate and textures

Tmnt I never did beat the first nes one
It was hard as my pecker! Lol mirin

Is it weird that I didn't really like BOTW and could only get a couple hours into it? I much prefer a more linear game like Link's Awakening or even all of the other Zelda games.

nope, have the same feeling and there are a lot of likeminded brahs
I did force myself to finish the game, even did all the shrines
but I don't look back at it fondly...
gonna get the 2nd one just because it's a Zelda and I've always gotten the new one for over 25 years but it's against better judgement lmfao
I wish they'd return to the N64-GC formula

It's what the creator of Zelda always wanted, Zelda OOT isn't a real Zelda but a compromise because tech wasn't there yet.

Now playing on switch :
Punch out and ninja gaiden are the only retro games I’ll still replay. The cartridges and the switch online. The latter rounds are still a challenge even if you get to super macho man. Everyone up until sandman I can say I have pretty much mastered. I beat sandman most times but he does drop me sometimes. Super macho man that triple spining punch he only needs to land a few big ones. those few big hits. Ninja gaiden the 4-5 levels always present a classic challenge that I like. Beating Level 6 would be stupid hard af.
Just having fun in xenoblade 1, this lore is all new to me as I’m late to the party.

I still disagree. All they did was make a new engine. I don't know what it takes to make a video game but especially for a zelda, I assume that the bulk of the work is the creative factor: building the dungeons, building the overworld, and creating an engaging story to tie it together. They didn't have to do any of that for this game. There was nothing creatively new in this game. Anyone who knows software could have done it, it took nothing from Nintendo's creative team which is what I normally love about Nintendo.

explain the GTA Definitive Edition then

Love Links Awakening Remake crew. Fantastic game
Also, making video game is way more difficult that most gamers realize. It’s a bias people have of thinking things they know nothing about are easier than they actually are. This is why so many dumb Americans think a CEO’s job would be easy and they make millions doing sitting back smoking a cigar

Playing Breath of the Wild, I’d rather it be linear with them telling me where to go vs trying to figure it on my own and getting my cheeks clapped by random mobs.

Years ago i bought a Wii U just to play this game, and i agree with you. Zelda is my favorite games and i thought this was boring. The shrines were creative but i prefer a more linear with actual Dungeons and a real story. It was just a big ass bland open world. That being said i'll still play the second one, and hope they made improvements from the first.
I've been thinking about buying a Nintendo Switch. I'd like to finally be able to play Skyward Sword. I'd also get luigis mansion, odyssey and some others too.

Yeah the shrines are boring as chit, gimme those old school Shadow Temple/Fire Temple dungeons that will take me 2-3 hours to complete. Idk how far I am, I’ve prob put in like 10-11 hours. I don’t feel like wasting mind power on shrines so if I can’t look at it and understand it in 1 min I just look at a guide.
I’m not sure what other game I’d get for the Switch, my fiance got the system as a work present. Nier and Xenoblade look good, I might get Harry Pooter tho.

If you like linear Zelda with great dungeons, Skyward Sword is a must play. IMO it has the best dungeon collection, best music, and best story of any Zelda game. There are some definitely chit stuff about it on the Wii version (motion controls blow, too much handholding, the companion sucks), but I heard those are fixed in the HD version which I haven't played.

Fire Emblem Engage Reviews: https://opencritic.com/game/13896/fire-emblem-engage
In the top 9% of all games released. Some tidbits are story and writing isn’t nearly as good as three houses but gameplay is super solid. And graphics are a step up over three houses

BOTW was great. Just needed a better shrine/dungeon ratio.
Couldnt even finish skyward sword with the whack controls. Probably the only zelda game i never finished.
I really hope TOTK is not just a reskin but has some innovation.
