not unless you're wearing a backpack full of cannonballs. just straight up pushups will get your chest pretty cut, but not big. i do have to admit, 3 sets of 50 pushups is impressive. You gotta find a bench man.
If you were doing that and eating a calorie surplus you may get a big of chest growth. A huge chest... not likely. Get a bench or a weight vest or something. Though you would get damn good at doing pushups if thats one of your goals.
Pushups come in handy when you want to cut fat.
No, if you want to induce muscle growth in your chest by doing push ups, you should be doing weighted ones and only doing between 6-12 reps (hypertrophy range) for each set.

explosive plyometric pushups will build muscle mass. ive seen results from them, and many mma fighters use them. but i gotta warn you, they aint easy.
I agree with others here on the board. You will certainly spurt some growth and get cut but not a whole lotta mass. not unless you're wearing a backpack full of cannonballs <---LOL or a weighted vest are options.... Pushups are good and use them myself at the end of my flat and incline bench press routine. After given my chest a good beating with flat and decline Bench Presses, I put my feet up on my workbench. In front of me are two bar chairs and put one hand on each and then perform deep pushups. I perform 3 - 4 sets of 10. This gives me lots of deep stretching and really finishes me off. This routine has helped me build a nice chest. (compliments / feedback from the ladies verifies this :) ) Best of luck and like others and myself recommend, a bench is needed. Check out www.craigslist.org in your area first. p.s. low reps and heavy weights will get you started such as the 5 x 5 program. P.S.S. don't forget to eat, eat and eat and give your body rest.

Add in some heavy push ups with a partner pushing on your upper back! Do them very slow and along with the plyometrics listed by Steeltoe you will force deeper muscle fibers into action, both slow twitch and fast twitch fibers are stimulated and you may indeed grow thicker, a lot depends on your focus and commitment! Hopefully helpful some. Keep your protein intake high and be sure to get plenty of BCAA's and glutamine within thirty minutes of your workout!

pushups can get you some decent mass. just look at the special forces. they only do pushups and pullups mainly and they are all well built. but for most people id say just stick to the bench

Without OPTIMAL genetics, no.

haha no.. im ex military and trained with SF many times. Every base has a gym.. After basic/ ait trainings u wont see anyone doing pushups except to get ready for a PT test.
Look man i have done thousands of pushups. I was in boxing as a kid/teen, and pushups was all i ever did ,sometimes light Bench press but mostly pushups. In the military i cant even estimate how many i have had to, and throughout all of that i never had a "huge" chest. I have had a cut chest, but it didnt look good if u ask me. Not until i start pumpin some iron did i start seeing my chest grow. But hell thats just me, I geneticly have a POS chest
Find a Bench press for mass and a peck deck for definition. Goodluck

You can... but probably moreso if you are doing modified pushups which are more diffficult.
Once you're up to a set of 50, that's a stage where you could add an incline, raise a leg, or emphasize an arm, to increase the tension component.
It's also not totally a numbers issue, because the angles you emphasize (like being deep) or time under constant tension (muscles lose some when arms lock out). Fast/slow as well as ballistic pushups vary stuff.
Pushups come in handy when you want to cut fat.
lol wut? They can be part of a good calisthenics routine I suppose, but tricep/chest/ab/hipflexor, while great muscles, aren't the biggest ones, and the bigger ones are better for cutting since they expend more calories.
Without OPTIMAL genetics, no.
Genetics get mentioned way too much. Everyone blames things on genetics, when there are multiple other factors. I really only want to hear it when people have isolated a gene in association with studying something. Most people just don't do this many proper pushups, that's why people don't get big chests.
Push-up angle tends to be a slight decline too, so you won't work your upper chest very well.
Can you get a huge chest just by doing push ups?
Short answer - no
Long answer - nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

WTF jibberish are you talking? Most of the military guys waste their extra time in the gym, because there is nothing else to do. How intelligently they work out is a completely different story. But do not think the rangers, seals, SF, or any other "elite" unit, is only doing push ups.

Yeah, pushups for chest mass and chinups for bicept mass!

Ugh...here I've been wrong all along, I was thinking you would want exercises in the 6-12 range for mass, and also direct work would be good...thank you for opening my eyes!!

Yes sir, I only do pushups - they are amazing for hyperbolictrophical musculaturation fiberz and biceptuals too.

Unless you have incredible pec genetics, not likely.
Push-ups will HELP your chest development though.

Oh ya totally, i once just did only pushups for a month but my fibers were getting too jacked from all the muscle that was growing... so i had to stop...

Pecnetics?
OP: Try explosive (clapping) and One Arm Push-ups. Also, do them with your feet propped up so you can hit the upper fibrahz more. You'll get a little more mass from those than doing straight push-ups 1000 times a day.

If this were true I would have come out of boot camp looking like the hulk. Push ups have a place, but not as a mass builder IMO
