On 9/11, my 75th year begins. Let me make it clear, when I post “stuff” that might carry the tag “bragging” or “preening,” my intentions are neither. I want to make the case for - in my opinion - a better and greatly effective way to build body for all the life we want to live. And it’s so simple: push and walk. Yes. Push a sled. Walk with weights every hand (Farmer’s Walk). Two things. Simple. Basic. But rarely done It’s gonna’ require “skin-in-the-game.” You will have to buy a set of bars and a sled. Few will do this. Preferring the antiseptic box maybe now 15 bucks a month of a place that is labeled a gym. And best, you do these in your neighborhood, on-demand training. I’ve been training like this for almost 15 years. Before that tried every thing, read everything, followed many inane training protocols, and nothing happened. Lots of trials and errors with little to show. And the largest false myth is that treadmill/stepper time works. Nope. Farmer’s Walk is the Rx that few reading this ever try. Today at almost 75, without much effort, as a result of obsessive (LOL) Farmer’s Walkin’ and sled pushin’, dispatched 77 reps on the leg press of 1037#. I tell ‘ya, walkin’ and pushin’ is “good for ‘ya.” Then you will be able to follow the footsteps of an ole’ man. LOL

One aspect of aging (you’ll confirm this truth sooner or later) is the ebb and flow of “energy. The days I push a sled or carry heavy laden bars (Farmer’s Walk) always results in the next day not walking to my garage gym and training. Just flat out all my fluids are a quart and half down. 😂 So when the “juice” returns, I take full advantage and push it. Today, one day after a rest day after a 400 pound sled push over a 600 foot high-friction concrete surface, in the morning after oatmeal topped by a banana and apple shards, and copious coffee, the garage gym beckoned and, “juice-full,” this: 1. 20 rep lite bar Smith Machine squat warmups. 2. Rack Olympic bar squats, 4x13x225#. 3. Calf raises/stretches launching off elevated wood block between squat sets, 3 foot positions 60 to 70 reps each. 4. Standing Smith Machine lite bar military presses, 4x12 5. In between sets, lite (5#) side lateral plate raises then moving each elevated plate plate from my sides and bringing them together in front of me, then holding steady - elevated - at my sides for a count of twelve. 4x12x5# each hand 6. EZ bar bicep curls 4x12x50# 7. Standing high cable double biceps curls, 4x15x40# (each side). 8. Pec deck flyes 4x8x140#. 9. Leg press (closer), 1037# (not a typo), reps 12-15-25-15-10 = 77

12 years ago, i had acl/ Meniscus surgery. I had just come back from my 3rd deployment in Iraq, and times were hard. I drank every day and all day, but today, I'm 7 years sober, and I lift weights and am involved in my church. God is good, and I'm grateful.
