Question Free weights questions

I've started working out since this summer with machines, and have slowly started adding free weights to my workouts. On machines, I've been getting up to about 70-80# for chest exercises, but when I use free weights I only get to about 15-20#. For shoulders, I'm able to do about 50# on...

Question Abs

What would be the best way to attack the old beer belly, spare tyre what ever you want to call it. I am on a healthy diet, am working out but have been avoiding the belly as I have been warned about the dreaded muscular pot belly. I need to start losing more cm's around my waste and apart from the...

Stiff legged deadlifts, stiff legs?

Just a Q. For stiff legged deadlifts, does it essentially work like a back extension? Where you keep your legs straight and lifting with your lower back, while trying to keep your hamstrings involved by focusing on stretching them during the movements?

Transition to Squatting

Hi everyone :) I just started working out a couple months ago. I tried squatting at first, but I wasn't strong enough. I've been doing the leg press instead and I've worked my way up to 270 lbs (started from 90 lbs). I want to try squatting again. I think my problem is my upper body isn't strong...

need cario suggestions

Hi All. New here and joining for the support and help--I've got about 105 pounds to lose. Some background: I'm 41, have 1 herniated low lumbar disc and creaky knees. I started lifting again about 4 months ago and haven't lost weight but have gotten stronger. FYI, I found squats over 210 are a...

Deadlift, small plates, bar too low

I just found out my that the biggest plates at my gym arent regular size. They are 35mm instead of 45mm regular, so the bar will be at 17,5 cm instead of 22,5 as it is commonly considered normal. Now the question is, Can I perform deadlifts safely like this? I read about not dropping the bar on...

Neck Presses vs. Incline Bench

Neck Presses aka Guillotine Bench Press. This is like flat barbell benching but instead of lowering the bar down to the middle of the pecs - you lower it below your neck (to the upper pecs). This has been known as a great way to build an upper chest. I've given it a try and I'd much rather do Neck...

Post Muscle overload vs failure

So to build muscle we should first breakdown it's tissue by overloading it. My question is why does this take so long? My chest workout for example consists of 5 exercises 3 sets each and each set is 10 reps, that takes me about an hour at the gym, which is fine. But I tried one day to go and...

I don't linearly progress on my bench and it's 115 but this isn't a bullsh*t thread

Not really on my squat or deadlift either. Before you write down to simply eat more and train harder, please don't waste your time because I've wasted much writing this long and drawn out thread. I don't say this to elicit some sort of sympathetic reaction, I just urge you to at least skim...

Exclamation Guillotine Press (pic)

-Just recently started to incorporate this movement into my routine, and so far I'm loving it. -I was hesitant to try these at first because it looks harsh on the shoulder joint, but it didn't give me any discomfort at all. In addition I get a huge pump in my chest compared to the traditional...

Best bicep exercises for mass?

I have a dodgy tendon problem at the bottom of my bicep, about a year and a half ago I strained the that tendon and it took a long time too heal up and it eventually healed up but it still can play up from time to time so some exercises that put a lot of strain on the bottom i.e preacher curls etc...

Guillotine press!!! not for the faint of heart

I always feel my incline BB press more in my front delts than my upper chest so after reading an article from www.romanfitnesssytems.com I decided to give this unheard of by me exercise a try. Supposedly invented by Vince Gironda (a god among classic bber's) this involves basically a flat barbell...

Failure Form Breakdown

So for my collegiate baseball lifting program, it has me lifting a weight determined on my max squat (obviously this is a rough estimate). The weight it has me deadlifting is far heavier than I can actually do, so I drop the weight a little bit. Regardless, it is extremely taxing. Our current...

Trying to build bigger arms - How long/how often?

Hey, So I've been lifting for a little over a year now and I'm happy with my progress for the most part, however just like they were before I started; my arms are proportionately too small for the rest of my body. That being sad, I'd like to increase my training frequency for them, although...

Hey guys, So I've been a strength training guy forever. I've hit my plateaus on most of my lifts (bench press mostly) and I've just been hanging around. Our local PT was chatting with me today and basically said, you need strength to have power and u need power to have strength. She said she...
