workouts - how important to write them down?

I've always kept a spiral notebook with me during workouts, jotting everything down from sets/reps, to how I was feeling, if something caused pain, to whether a particular lift needed extra work... I've always felt like I *had* to write it down, otherwise how would I make progress? But I wonder...

can you develop decent quad mass with only leg ext/leg curl?

I hate to even ask, but I'm still struggling with SI joint pain, to the point that squats, deadlifts, lunges, and full ROM leg press are out of the question. It could be months before I can do any of those lifts... I don't have too many options left for working my quads, that eliminates any low...

Coming back after serious illness
