muscle gain

Question for you trainers, I'm just a regular guy, somewhat athletic, I have gained 7lbs of lean muscle in 3 months. Is that an avg rate of gain or is it slow and I should be gaining quicker?

First step to being certified?

What would be the first step to obtaining a certification? I acknowledge the fact that I would have to study, I have no problem with that but where/how do I start? I overheard someone saying there's a novice level certification that doesn't take long to earn.
