Thumbs up Sticky Thread Sticky: This week in the O35 II

On this day BLK00TJ is competing at the 2015 Mid-Atlantic State Championships and Military Nationals. I've competed alongside this lifter and his squat is nothing short of elite. Yesterday I had a few surprise PR's in the gym (sorry no pics or vids) Barbell Bench 265 x 6, Dumbells 110's x 9,...

Arrow Sticky Thread Sticky: The Official Ov35 Bench Press Thread!

May as well throw this one out there so we have all 3 major lifts represented. :) Open to ideas as to how things should run but here's how I see it..... - must be Flat BB Bench only (using an OLY bar). No Incline Bench, Decline Bench or DBs. - Raw lifts only. No shirted benching. (wrist...

Advice for a 30-something newbie

Hello - I'm 35 this year so thought this was the most appropriate forum. Hoping someone can offer some advice. I've never really lifted (had a few stints in the gym but nothing that lasted); I've never been athletic or sporty and for a long time was scared of the gym and too interested in food....

Getting to 10% BF at 44yo.... a bitch. Getting to 12.5% wasn't that bad. But the strictness of my diet and hitting my macros so I don't lose all my muscle gives me a new respect for guys (especially a bit older) who can get 10% and below. I'll get there, but it's a damn hard journey. ok, back to lifting.

grip / forearm failure point

Hey, I just started hitting the gym with a trainer just before the holidays having never really done anything weight lifting wise before. Things have been going good but I figured I'd ask here just to get some other opinions. So typically it seems my left forearm is the failure point of not...

Lift Popularity

I can’t recall seeing anyone in my gym performing a Pendalay Row (few do a normal row with barbell), virtually nobody except the powerlifters and a few ladies doing deadlifts, and less than a handful of people ever doing an overhead press with a barbell. Squats and chest press are more popular,...

Tell me it's all in my head...

I've been strength training for a year, good progress so far. I feel like I've hit a bit of a wall lately and am all up in my head about my age impacting my ability for me to really move forward in a bigger and better way. Specifically, I'm looking to build more muscle and lose some fat. I've...

Feel totally defeated by this year's flu strain

I took four days off to recover, went back to the gym yesterday as I felt totally fine. I had a light workout session, a deload. Went back home and the flu came back with an absolute vengeance. This years strain in the UK is called Aussie Flu. I have never had the flu come back with such a...

Lower back pain - chiropractor

I’ve suffered for low back pain for years…and it seemed to get worse once I became a dad and had to hold my children and carry them around. My youngest is 3 now, so I’m really not holding them as much as I used to. Still I have lower back pain though. So I started seeing a chiropractor who...

Am I overtraining?

Hi all, Hoping to get some advice from you to see if I may be overtraining. I’m 40, male, used to train about 18 months ago, was in good shape, 180 pounds, weight training 4 times a week and steady state cardio 4 times a week. Then over 1 year I put on 60 pounds and minimal training. ...

Is Soreness Necessary for Growth?

I've seen a bunch of articles; some say yes, some say no. I was wondering what the forum thought. I have been training for most of the last 35 years. I don't get sore anymore no matter what I do. I do a pretty standard routine of hitting each body part twice a week (actually twice every 8 days on a...

I keep hurting my shoulder

This is getting frustrating. After a positive 2017 (I finally got my first proper squats and saw real progress on the main lifts) I started with shoulder issues in Sept/Oct. I eventually took the last month off (eating badly and gaining weight, but that's another story with a simple fix). The...

Anyone had a nerve conduction test done?

Gotta have this done soon. I was operating on 2 hours sleep and probably went full potato, but I couldn't figure out how the test was actually done when I researched it. Looked like they out electrodes on your arm and then shock you with electricity when they touch a needle to your arm. Can...

Ratio Changed - 5x5 to 5RM

I took 3 weeks off a little over a month ago for various reasons. Im running TM, so I 5x5 on Mon and 5RM on Fri. Since I came back from that little break, my 5RM on bench for a given 5x5 is off. Before the break my 5RM on bench was consistently 25lbs more than my 5x5 (since they both went up...

One year with fatloss

So a year ago I started my fat loss program. I've been training for a good few years previous to that but my diet was terrible and I put on a lot of fat with any muscle i hopefully gained. So last January I decided to get my bodyfat down. I weighed 106.5kg (235lbs) at the start. Unsure of my...

Help Arm Day

Maintaining a goal physique vs pushing hard forever

In another thread this was tangentally brought up. I personally have a goal of 300/400/500 on the big 3, I've seen other guys at my height and those numbers usually get a look I'd like to hold long term. I figure at that point I'll cut gym volume/time in half to maintain and spend more time...

5/3/1 deadlifts amrap question

For those who've run the program, do you really amrap the deadlifts? I did 5/3/1 years ago when my deadlift was a little more than half of what it is now. I'm midway through my second cycle and finding recovery kicking my ass. I don't feel like I gave 5/3 /1 a fair evaluation years ago, so...

Shooting head pain...from lifting??

I'm 36 and have been back in the gym 3-5 days/week for almost a year now. Getting great results. Of course being a little older I have shoulder pains and elbow pains. A little different today. On Saturdays (yesterday) I do an intense superset arm workout that kills. No problem when I left other...

High rep sets / fast bar speed and my form isn't as tight. Big deal?

Saw an old thread here where someone was asking about 15 rep sets and I was surprised to see near unanimous agreement that they feel good and get results too. So I've been trying them out (also liking them as I try to find the exact working weight, we'll see once I dial in correctly). But I...
