Chest is not being worked whilst performing dumbbell bench press

When I perform dumbbell bench presses, I feel my chest is not being worked. Should to dumbbells be brought down as close to my rib cage (or sides) as possible? Should I also kinda dig my back into the bench? Thanks in advance for any help.
