Thought I'd ask the ladies this one because you generally have a better handle on all things dermatological.

What is a good product for diminishing scars? I have a few that I'm trying to get rid of.

What I am currently doing is using Mederma (which is pretty costly for the number of scars I have) and also using a moisturizer with Vitamin E. For a while when the wounds were fresh I used Neosporin, but that gets really expensive (those tubes are really small! LOL)

Anything you would recommend for this would be greatly appreciated.

I would think that the vit E is really the best way to go. Moisturizing our skin is the best thing that we can do for aging and imperfections. This is for Men and Woman. Of course I do not know what kind of scars you have but most generally, it will take time for them to go away. Even with this great moisturizing. I would think within 6 mths the scars would look really great. Just moistuize daily if not atleast every other day. But daily is always best. Good luck :-)

the best most effective way to remove scars is with laser surgery, i know celebrities get it done to remove scars from the face area, its very effective and works but its a little expensive. if you have the cash you can get it done, no problem.

How about a 3'' x 3'' scar? What can I use to remove that?

I have never used it personally, but I have heard really great things about dermablend.
It doesn't get rid of the scar - but supposedly it covers it up beautifully.

^I totally agree. Buying these products that are purpose built for 'toning' away scars is cumulatively expensive. Instead I've started using an ordinary concentrated moisturising cream (Palmer's Cocoa Butter) twice a day and combined with natural sun tanning many of my scars heal relatively fast.

I have though used a commercial product called 'Bio Oil' and it did work for stretch marks (not really scarring) but it was expensive, annoying to apply since it was oily and required devoted use. For the results I was seeing I preferred to use something like Palmer's.

I've actually done laser surgery (you need a referral from your GP). It was expensive and you have to pay for a trial to test if your skin is suitable first (I did mine a long time ago and I think it was >$800 - $1,200, I can't really recall). It actually made my scars hyperpigment'ise and darken. It's not a surgery suited for olive, medium tanned skins or for those with dark hairs. So after the trial the lady prescribed me a special formula which had to be made at a special pharmacy that contained hydrochloric acid. I applied this onto my scars once every day. This gel was about $50 a tub (from memory).

I've also had recent scars on me (ironing myself with an iron which left a massive welt, hitting the light tubes on a bain marie which has left parallel scars on my forearms) and as a preventative measure I strap on aloe vera flesh to cover and leave it on as long as possible whenever I remembered. I did this for a week or two. I still retain the scars but they're not that bad. The iron welt disappeared after 2 years.

In my opinion, the specially formulated acid cream worked best for my worst scars (they were pretty bad).

I had some pretty bad scars that were about 3 in long and raised. Scarguard (silicone gel) from walgreens has helped with the scar tissue and I can barely feel the scars anymore. They are still a little pink though. I've heard a lot of people have success with Bio Oil and Mederma.

What kind of scars?

Lazers work pretty well. I had scars on my legs for about 4 years (stupid NEET hair remover). I wouldn't wear shorts or skirts etc. After that I decided to get all the hair lazered off and the scars went away before the hair did. And I mean they're gone...my legs look better now then they did when I was in my teens.

I've heard people try everything...I was using polysporn for years and I didn't find any difference. I also had vitamin E capsules which didn't help. I've heard emu oil is suppose to be the best but the people I know that have used it well, they don't look any different to me. If you want a dramatic change. Lazers. Although it's fun, in the long run lazers are cheaper then oiling up.

^^^ This. It's not practical or affordable, but lasers/microdermabrasion are the best ways to get rid of them (provided you are a desirable candidate for such procedures).

In addition to the products aimed at moisturizing your scar away like Vitamin E and other oils, you could start using a retinoid; retinoids boost collagen production and increase skin cell turnover.

I might have to try some of these suggestions! I had one of my hip dermals rip out and it left a pretty nasty scar that I would really like to be gone!

I have had six dermals that are now out and I found bio oil and vit e cream to be the most successful at healing them.
