Hey there everyone. I came to the sports training forum hoping there would be a few runners in here that might be able to help me out.

I've decided that I would like to train for a marathon in September of 2007. The thing is, I've never ran over six miles at one time. I've never trained for anything like this before, which means that I know nothing about it.

If anyone, especially runners could link me up with some web sites and if you could provide some tips/advice as to what I should go about doing.

I'm a beginner. Just remember that, haha. Hey thanks a lot guys.

I've done a couple of half marathins but never the full monte but it is on the list. I've got a book called Galloway's Book On Running that has training programs set out for different length races and finishing goals. Your library may have a copy of it.

The main thing with distance running is having one long slow distance run every week and continually building on it. The first time I ran a half, I trained up to 10 miles then suffered like a dog the last couple in the race. The second one I did a 12 mile run a couple of weeks before and didn't have any problems. Everything that I have read says to build up to 20 for a full marathon.

Nutrition is another biggie. You will have to take in calories on the road once your runs go much over an hour. If you don't you will bonk badly and it is not pretty.

I would reccomend joining a running club if there is one in your area. There is always some old guru in the club who just love giving advice. Usually it is good.
