Hi!! I'm going to be starting the body for life program and was wondering, it says to do 20 mins of cardio first thing in the morning, I dont have readily accessable cardio equipment, and there's too much snow outside to do anything out there. Is jumping rope okay, and is it possible to do this intensly. If so will my calf muscles become too large?

Also I was wondering if any of you have tried this program?

Avis, I started a Body For Life Journal & put the first few weeks in the thread entitled Body For Life Journal under the Journaling section. I think it's a great program -- I have moved the rest of my Journal to the over 35 section and am switching up a few things like cycling calories & stuff but that is just because my body was at a point where I needed to tweak things to drop any more bodyfat.

Jumping rope is great cardiovascular exercise, but as far as being able to do it 20 minutes -- that may be pretty tough! Are you planning on lifting at a gym? You could do your cardio after lifting if there's no way you can do it prebreakfast. It is optimal to do it before breakfast though. Definitely don't do it before lifting.

If you have any questions, feel free to PM me. :)

Welcome Avis!

BFL is a great program to get you started with weight training and diet.
I did it a couple years ago myself. And had great results.

Jumping rope for 20 mins? I agree with Hib that it might be tough to do that for that long. But try it.
And if you can't get cardio done in the morning....anytime is ok as long as you get it in on your scheduled days.

Best of luck to you!

Anything to get your heart rate up is great, however I think interval training is great. I do my cardio in the morning, I walk/light jog here in the snow. :D I love it. It's a great kick in the @$$ to wake you up. :D

I think jumping rope is fine. It's high enough intensity to get your heart rate where it needs to be, and even if you can't do 20 minutes, the goal would be to work up to 20 minutes. A lot of people may not realize, but HIIT cardio was first featured in Muscle Media, which was owned by Bill Philips at the time. IMO BFL was just a way for Bill to dumb down a lot of the same techniques, that had been detailed over the years in Muscle Media, for the masses. In fact, the original article on HIIT cardio said to start with as little a 4 minutes or 4 high intensity intervals.
