Ahhh...good to be home, good to be home. Oh, who am I kidding. I wanna go back on vacation!!!! We had a great time out on the west coast. Just me and the wife, no rug rats!
We spent the first 2 days out in San Diego. Great scenery out there and awesome weather. Each day out there was around 68 and 69 degrees and mostly sunny. We spent the first full day there running around the down town area, then out to Coronado Island. We too the ferry out to Coronado which was awesome passing all the air craft carriers. We visited the Coranado Del Hotel, which is an awesome place. It's right out on the beach. We took some pics out on the beach, and of course got our feet out into the ocean, and it was sooo cold.
The next day we checked out of our hotel and went to Sea World. In hindsite, we could take or leave Sea World. Totally over priced (which all of those places are) and for us not a ton to see. We left there around 3:00 and headed to Pacific Beach to have dinner before heading to L.A. The restaurant was right on the beach, and it was gorgous having dinner and watching the sun go down.
After dinner, we headed to L.A. Anaheim, actually. We checked into the Desert Palm hotel, just down the street from Disney. This was Saturday night, so we just crashed until the next day. We made reservations for Sunday evening to take a plane ride around L.A. at night. Since Cali is 3 hours behind Indiana, we elected to drive out to a mall to have lunch and walk around for a while. We went back to the hotel and rested up for the plane ride. The plane took us all around the L.A. area and out to the harbors and such. We got back to the hotel around midnight California time, which was really like 3:00am to us. So, needless to say we crashed big time!
Monday we took a tour bus out to Universal Studios. This was a blast. Running around the park acting like teenagers again (man, we're getting old!) After the park closed at 6:00pm, we strolled around the shops outside the park waiting for out tour bus at 8:00. The bus then took us down to the Walk of Fame outside the Chinese theater. This was great to finally see the walk of fame after seeing it on TV all my life. The bus then took us around the Sunset Strip, Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, etc.
While at Universal Studios, we got free guaranteed tickets to the Tonight Show for Tuesday. We decided to do this instead of Disney (sure was cheaper). We drove down to Burbank after figuring out directions and had lunch at the WB cafeteria. We headed over to the NBC lot and got in line for the show. The Pages got everyone who had the guaranteed tickets off to the side, and after figuring out how many others to let in, let us in and showed us to the seats. We sat over by the band, basically to the left of Kevin Eubanks. Leno came out and warmed the audience up. He really seemed like nothing but class. The guests were Courtney Love and Brad Garrett. He was hilarious, and she was actually coherant :)
After coming out of the Tonight Show, there was a guy asking if people wanted to go to Last Call w/ Carson Daly. We said sure, and headed over to that studio. We had awesome seats there, sitting in the second row. I was on the end, and when Carson came out I literally could have reached out and smacked him (hehehhe.) He actually was taping two shows that night, so we got two for the price of one. He last guest was the musical guest, it was a rapper called Xhibit, or however it is spelled. Of course, neither of us had heard of him. They wanted people in the front rows to stand in front of the stage and dance and cheer and stuff as this guy performed. So, here we were, these two country music listening, square midwesterners, on national tv standing front and center trying to dance to rap music. It wasn't pretty :)
That was pretty much it. The next morning, we packed and checked out of the hotel, then headed out to LAX for our flight back to Indiana. I won't start back on my workout program until Monday. I sure have a lot of work to do to get my diet back in place since California basically destroyed it :)

Thanks JT, it's good to be back.
Well, back to the gym this morning. I weighed in, and it looks like the vacation put about 5 lbs on me, which was about what I expected. So, since my last thread got deleted with the outage a couple of weeks ago, let me restate my plans as of now:
Since I'd been doing mostly full body workouts this year, I am going to temporarily do a body split program called HSS-100, designed by Christian Thibedeau(sp) over at T-Nation.com. Basically, each day you start out with doing a heavy movement for that body part, followed by a superset which includes a compound movement and an isolation movement. Then you do what he called a special movement, and you finish it up with one set of 100 reps on an exercise. I fudge on the last and do only 50-80, but will workup to the 100. So, here was the routine this morning for quads:
Back Squat : 4 x 6
Superset :
Hack Squat : 3 x 8
Split Squat : 3 x 9
Low Cable Squat : 3 x 8
Leg Extention : 1 x 80
My plan is to work my kcals up to get my metabolism working again. I'm currently going to take in around 2400 on training day, and 2000 on non training days. I want to work up up to around 2800 on training day by the end of January. I'll try and stay on the body part split until then, then around the first of February I'll go back to Waterbury style full body workouts and dropping kcals again in order to cut some.
Hope all had a great weekend. GO COLTS!

This morning was supposed to be back day, but the alarm refused to go off this morning. Akkk! I was scrambling to get me and the two boys ready on time this morning. No worries, Thursday is a build in off day, so it just now becomes a workout day. The quads are sore after yesterdays workout, so I will try to take a long walk to day to try and loosen them up some. Have a good one folks.

Ah yes, an alarm clock catastrophe (Dunkin Donuts commercial in our area). Maybe the alarm clock is still on vacation?
No doubt the legs will be reminding you you worked them out hard for a day or two.

Ray: Ha ha...you're right about the legs...they are still pretty sore. It's one of those things that the sorness feels great, but after a while it kind of becomes annoying.
This morning was chest day/shoulder day in the world of HSS-100. Here was the routine:
Bench : 4 x 6
Superset:
Rear Delt Raise : 3 x 10
Incline Bench : 3 x 8
Cable Side Raises, round style : the set/rep scheme for this is a bit wacky. You do a set of 6 raises for one shoulder, then you do the other. Do this 4 times, and this round is a set. Done for a total of 3 sets
Peck Deck : 1 x 100. Believe it or not, although I did 100 reps, the weight was too light for even that! I underestimated :)
So that was this mornings workout. I now return you to your regular scheduled web browsing.

Cardio today, and it was 30 minutes of incline walking on the treadmill. Nothing too taxing, just enough to get the engines reving for a while. Hope everyone is having a great week. The weather here in the Indianapolis area has been aweful the last couple of days!

Morning, Hoosier! :) I've never tried doing 100 reps of anything, though I've read it's a good shock to the system. I wouldn't have a clue which weight to choose on a given exercise. I guess it's a trial and error kind of thing.
Nice job on the workout!
Happy Thursday!
HoosierHardGain
11-16-2006, 08:51 AM
Thanks Hibby! The 100 reps really are not hypertrophy inducing. They are basically to aid in recovery, or at least that's what the article said.

Hey, we made it to Friday!!!! I'll be doing back work later today, and tomorrow will be the hammies! It's amazing, my legs are still a little bit sore from Monday's workout. Must be old age setting in.

11-20-2006, 07:04 AM
Well, back at it after the weekend, and it was quad day:
Squat : 4 x 5 - PB as far as weight for 5 reps
Superset :
Machine Hack Squat : 3 x 9
Split Squat : 3 x 10
Low Cable Squat : 3 x 8
Leg Extention : 1 x 80
A bit of a rant here...why is it that a whole gym can lose all of its 2.5lb plates and half of its barbell collars? I spent 5 minutes looking for both of these before I could start my squats. Arggg!!!
HoosierHardGain
11-21-2006, 06:32 AM
Well, I actually had no problems this morning finding collars or 2.5lb plates. The gym I go to is pretty inexpensive, only $20 a month, so I guess I have to figure I get what I pay for. Anyway, here was the plan today:
Bench : 4 x 7 - I was able to increase reps this week!
Superset:
Rear Delt Raise : 3 x 10
Incline Bench : 3 x 8
Side Raise, Round Style : Do 6 reps with one shoulder, then 6 with another. Repeat this a total of 4 times without rest, and this is a round. I completed 3 "rounds"
Pec Deck : 1 x 100
And that was this mornings program. Please thank your usher on the way out :)
HoosierHardGain
11-22-2006, 07:15 AM
Well, I hope everyone is getting their stomachs ready for the big day tomorrow. Hey, turkey has a lot of protein!
Barbell Rows : 4 x 7
Superset:
Pulldowns: 3 x 9
Deadlift : 3 x 8
Torso bent low cable row : 3 x 9
Chin pulldown : 1 x 70
DB Shrug : 3 x 8
Incline DB Shrug : 2 x 12
I wish all you a happy Thanksgiving, and have a happy start to the Christmas season.

It was just fine, mom24. Of course, I ate more than I should, but what else should I expect on Thanksgiving.
Back to the gym this morning, and here was the show:
Squats : 3 x 5
1 x 6
Superset :
Sissy Squat : 3 x 15
Machine Hack : 3 x 8
Low Cable Squat: 3 x 9
Leg Ext : 1 x 100 (finally got it!)

Oh man, what a morning. I go and do my workout, and as I am walking out the door, my cell rings. It's my wife and asking when I am coming, because baby hoos is out of control. She had woken up, and only wanted me. I get home, and the little girl becomes attached to my hip. I can't get more than 2 feet away from her or she go bananas. I was about 45 minutes late for work because we had to move things around so I could get the little thing calmed down....yep, she has me totally wrapped around her little finger :)
The workout: Chest/shoulders
Bench : 4 x 7
Superset :
Rear delt raises : 3 x 11
Incline bench : 3 x 9
Side Raise, muscle round style : see previous post for explanation. 3 sets
Leg Extention : 1 x 100
I keep working on the diet too. I'm basically trying to raise my cals about 100 cals a week, getting up to around 2700, which is more than I've used. I'll try to keep that up through January, then start dropping in February for fat loss. Hopefully this should get my matabolism reset to a more normal level.

Bench : 1 x 7, 2 x 8, 1 x 6

Back into the gym this morning. Decided to go ahead and start back with some cardio, also. The fat is starting to creep up on me with increasing my calories and carbs and such. Here was the show:
Front Squats : 4 x 6
Superset:
Hack Squat : 3 x 7
Step Ups : 3 x 9
Leg Press : 4 x 8
15 minutes of incline intervals on the treadmill. Hope ya all have a great Monday!

Hello all. I haven't been journaling lately since I've been doing mostly maintenance type workouts. And of course, don't ask me about my diet :) I do have my post-holiday eating plan worked out. I'll be starting with a maintenance diet for about 2 weeks, then begin slowly lowering cals for fat loss.
I sincerly want to wish all of you a very Merry Christmas. I pray you all get to your Christmas destinations safely. And of course, while chowing down on that Christmas goose, don't think about carbs or fat grams :)

Hey, Happy New Year everyone! Now it's time to get serious again about diet and working out...at least for me it is :(
I did get a workout in on New Years day. I'm going back to 3 full body workouts each week. Trying to get the 4 body part split workouts were getting to be a bit much for me, so I realized it was time to go back to full body spits. Here was the workout for yesterday:
Squats : 4 x 5
Neutral Grip DB Bench : 4 x 7
Good Mornings : 3 x 10
Tricep Extentions : 3 x 10
15 minute interval on the treadmill

Well, yesterday was supposed to be a workout day, but due to staying up too late cleaning the kitchen, I decided to break the last two workouts up. So, today I did legs and rear delts...plus treadmill stuff, of course :)
Supserset:
Hack Squats : 3 x 6
Step ups : 3 x 10
Read Delt Raises : 3 x 7
15 minute intervaling on the treadmill.
Tomorrow will be Chest and back, and hopefully Monday I can get into the full body stuff again.

P.S. I think anyone who can put 'happy' and 'cardio' in the same sentence is nuts!
Thanks DB...and I agree on the cardio :)
THis morning was weights, and I felt strong, so I was able to do some heavy weights. I stepped on the scale before hand, and I was actually up a pound. Probably just normal water weight fluctuation, plus a product of my metabolism slowing down. I may do a small carb up on Sunday to give it a kick.

As promised, I did do a slight carb up yesterday, which basically amounted to a bowl of oatmeal. Let me tell ya though, when my two sons asked for ice cream and I was dishing it out to them, man it looked awefully good! But, I resisted.
This morning was weights, doing 6 sets of 4. One of the movements was squats, and for some reason I dread squats right now. Not sure why, but getting ready to go the the gym and thinking about having to do squats really makes me uneasy about going.

Well, they didn't shy away from Ray Lewis, so I guess Urlacher won't overly scare them. However, I am sure the Bears secondary will get tired of seeing Harrison and Wayne run by them on their way to the endzone :)

The game will be won or lost in the trenches.
The play of the offensive and defensive lines will probably determine the outcome of the game.

Well, things have calmed down somewhat at work now, but still been extremely busy. I was up really late one night with my son's science fair display. It was for the oldest, who is in the second grade. The science fair is optional at that grade, but he was really really wanting to do a project. He made a modal of the Solar System, which is pretty easy. You can buy styrofoam planets at a hobby store, which is what we did. He then painted them and I helped him assemble everything. The display is another thing. An 8 year old isn't really equiped to make a presentable display, so we talked about what he wanted to put on it and I printed things out off of the computer. Come 10 at night, I made him go to bed and I stayed up and finished pasting everything to the board for him. But wanna know the kicker? School ended up being cancelled the next day due to fog! I COULD HAVE WENT TO BED!!!! Oh well, me and him will look back and laugh at it someday :)
We hadn't gotten to work on it that much because I have been so darn busy with work, having to work extra on the weekends and late during the week. This week my hours have been fairly normal, but now the youngest is sick, as is HoosierWife. So, there has been no getting up early and heading to the gym. Hey, my duty to them come first :)
By the way, last Sunday HoosierBaby turned 2! I guess I can now just start calling her HoosierGirl!

We were originally on a 2 hour delay. I went ahead and took my son's project to school for him on my way to work. I only live about a mile 1/2 from the school, and it was pretty scary. Then I get to school and ask the principal if they are still having the science fair, and he says "Well, I just found out that school is closed for the day." Soooo...
I then drove on to work, and the closer I got to downtown Indy, the better it was. The fog in Hamilton County was aweful.

Well, the Tuesday weight workout is listed below. Later today I'll be doing interval training on a treadmill. Tomorrow morning will be my next weight lifting session. Made it to the gym early this morning for my second weight workout this week. I am thinking of only doing two strength training sessions a week in order to do more cardio. But, we'll see how it goes. Here was this mornings show:
Machine Squats : 3 x 10
Side Raises : 3 x 10
DB row : 3 x 8
DB Incline Bench : 3 x 10
I know I said I was staying away from squats for a while, but this was a new machine my gym had and I thought I would give it a try. It was decent, not as good as doing real squats, but better than the smith machine variety.

I added weight to every excercise except for bench. I'll probably do a similar rep scheme the rest of this week and next, then move on to something like 5x5 for a while.

Cardio this morning. I did 25 minutes on the treadmill. I pretty much use the incline to add intensity. Running/jogging really bothers the tendonitis in my knees, so I just increase the incline rather than running too much. Diet is going well, although I ran out of time to cook breakfast this morning. I substituted a protein shake and a handfull of almonds. Hey, not perfect but better than nothing :)

It's a rampant mindset on bodybuilding sites. Basically like kids on a playground, a lot of people, mostly men, feel they need to make themselves feel better by downing others. To be fair, I haven't really seen it in the over 35 section here, probably due to the relative maturity of, say, teens.

Hey Thinton! Welcome to my little corner. Things are going well around here. I've finally been able to get back into a routine, and it feels great!
Well, this week I've started a program that was written by Christian Thibaudeau which is basically a cutting program. This morning called for two 5 exercise circuits. The first circuit is done in the 12-15 rep range, and the second is in the 15-20 rep range. Problem was I had problems getting through the circuits. I tried using mostly machines for this, to minimize setup and break down time. But, the truth is you really can't reserve 4 or 5 machines. You try to work in with others, but it gets rough. Here was the show today:
Circuit 1: 12-15 rep range
Machine chest press
Leg Press
Low Row
Leg Curl
Crunches
Circuit 2: 15-20 rep range
DB Shoulder Press
Leg Extention
Chest Supported Row
Sitting leg curl
Side Bends
Each circuit is performed 3 times. I think next week I will try and set up at least part of the first circuit with free weights. Doing DB Bench instead of the machine press and doing BB rows.

Today's an off day for me. It'll pretty much be work and then helping the wife clean up the house tonight. If anyone wants to come to central Indiana and help clean up, let us know :)
By the way, I want to know if anyone can recommend any hamstring exercises other than good mornings and leg curls? I've tried cable pullthroughs, but I am not sure if I do them right. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Good Monday morning, all! Hope everyone had a great weekend. This morning was a heavy day, and I focused on the legs:
A1: Machine Squat : 3 x 6
A2: Leg Press : 3 x 9 (need to go a bit heavier)
B1: Good Mornings : 3 x 5
B2: Leg Curls : 3 x 6
I kept the diet pretty clean during the weekend, which is a miracle!

Good morning to ya all. I was up and at it bright and early again today. Today was hight rep circuits, and I was actually able to work them as circuits instead of having to break them up. Here was the show:
Circuit 1:
DB Incline Bench : 3 x 13
Hack Squat : 3 x 13
Bent over BB Row : 3 x 12
Lying Leg Curl : 3 x 12
Circuit 2:
Machine Shoulder Press : 3 x 17
Leg Extention : 3 x 20
Machine Back Extention : 3 x 15
Sitting Leg Curl : 3 x 20
And that as they say is that. The diet remains strong...haven't entered into FitDay since last week, but I suspect the calories are still doing ok. Hope everyone has a great Tuesday!

Thanks Josie! FitDay is a great tool, and is invaluable when starting a new eating plan. I tend to use it the first week or two on a new eating plan to just get a feel how much I am taking in, then when I need to adjust the plan I go back to FitDay to make sure I am getting the right macros and calories.

Also, Friday my Grandmother pass away at the age of 87. She'd been in a nursing home since a few weeks after 9/11. Demintia had set in the last few years, and had been confined to a wheel chair for a few years now. She lived a long great life, and now can join my Grandpa in heaven.

The memorial service is planned for Friday. I think the reason it is taking a week is because my middle brother is overseas, and allthough he cannot make it back, he is sending a taped speech that will be played at the service. The service is planned on being more of a celebration of her life as apposed to being a drab, depressing type of service.
Managed to get some cardio in today, in the form of interval walking/sprinting. It was another short night because my wife and I were up late helping the oldest getting his presentation finished. Today was slated to be a high rep day, but the little one didn't sleep last night, and she only wanted Daddy to keep rocking her back to sleep. Plus the tendonitis in my knees is acting up, so I decided to rest the legs today. We'll try it again tomorrow!

Yep...I'm proud of all 3 of my little ones. My two boys really look after her, too. Thanks for the thoughts on Grandma...like I said, she had a long good life, now can spend all her time with Grandpa again.

Thanks...but I am not allowing her to date until she is about 37 :)
This morning was a high rep morning. I was supposed to do 2 circuits, but time only allowed me to do one. I was determined to get into the gym no matter what this morning, and I somehow rolled my butt out of bed and went :)
The workout, done as a circuit:
DB Incline Bench: 3 x 13
BB Hack Squat : 3 x 12
BB Row : 3 x 12
Good Mornings : 3 x 13
This circuit does wear me out pretty good, so it isn't like I ended up with a lite workout.
Hope you all have a great Hump Day!

Thanks Josie. The program I am on calls for 2 days of heavy lifting, and two days of high rep circuits. Usually I am lucky to just get on the one circuit day.
She's adorable Hoos!
Why thank you, Tiff!

Uh...well....our camera has this defect that only allows pictures of our kids to be taken...yeah...that's it...
No workout this morning. I may do some cardio later if my knees feel like it. The tendonitis has been flaring up lately after being pretty good for a while. Last week I helped my oldest son's baseball team by catching during batting practice. No, I didn't put on any gear or anything, I just caught the pitches and returned them to the coach. But just that little bending down caused them to act up.
Hope everyone has a fine Thursday. One more day and the weekend begins!

hmmmm...I knew I should have filed that restraining order.
Daimozz, Josie: The tendoitis in my knees is ok. When it flares up, I need to ice it at night basically. It's something I will always have probably. Actually, it'll probably flare up today because of weekend chores. I guess you guys will just have to come do them for me...
